Do Now Independent Reading (10 minutes) If you did not have a book yesterday (or you changed your book choice since then), make sure I give you credit/take down the information for your book today.

Me and my friends begged her mom to take us to the mall but she will refuse to take us.

Meter The rhythm of a poem Count the number of syllables in each line. Is there any sort of pattern? If not, is there any other observation you can make? What is the effect of a very short line? A very long line?

What is the effect of having all lines the same length? I’ll never forget the time I woke up before the birds The sky was so clear and bright Was too beautiful for words

What is the effect of very short lines? Boom! Crash! The cat moves fast. Zoom! Flash! Gone in a snap.

What is the effect of longer lines? Before I leave the house, my mother asks: Did you make your bed? And when is that test you said you had? And did you study? ‘Cause you know kids who never study don’t amount to much. And I remember being your age and I always, always listened to my mom. And are you listening? Are you listening to me?

Haiku Japanese poetic form Three lines long The first line has five syllables, the second has seven, the third has five Here’s an example Count all seven syllables Now there’s only five

More about Haiku About nature, includes seasonal words to indicate time of year (snow, sunshine, leaves, rain, flowers blooming, etc.) The last winter leaves Clinging to the black branches Explode into birds

Juxtaposition Two contrasting things placed side by side Talk about two different ideas and show some connection between them Clean blue day. The clouds Still in the sky. Until a Crackling brown leaf falls. “Clean blue day” does not have any obvious connection to “crackling brown leaf.” (On the previous slide) “Winter leaves” unexpectedly connects to “explode into birds.” The relationship between the first and last line should not be an obvious one.

Assignment: Write two original Haikus For the first one, follow the traditional rules for meter, subject matter, and juxtaposition For the second one, only follow the rules for meter (subject can be anything!)

Cinquain Five line poem Based on syllables: Line 1: 2 syllables Line 2: 4 syllables Line 3: 6 syllables Line 4: 8 syllables Line 5: 2 syllables OR Based on number of words Line 1: 1 word Line 2: 2 words Line 3: 3 words Line 4: 4 words Line 5: 1 word

What should be in each line? Line 1: Title Line 2: Description of title Line 3: Some action about the title Line 4: Feeling about the title Line 5: Synonym for title Example (also follows the syllables pattern): My school It’s where I learn Reading, thinking, writing Can be boring, but can be fun Like home

Assignment: Write two original Cinquains, adhering to the different structures we learned One must follow rules for the number of syllables in each line (2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 2) The other must follow rules for the number of words in each line (1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 1) At least one must follow rules for the content of each line (title / description of title / some action about the title / feeling about the title / synonym for title)
