1 Grassroots Innovation for Social Change

Introduction 2 BACKGROUND: Established in 2009, RLabs was founded in Cape Town on the Cape Flats. OFFERING: RLabs provides a three-phased approach to solving the socio-economic challenges through its Training & Development, Innovation Lab and Enterprise incubation MISSION: Our aim is to reconstruct communities through training, innovation and entrepreneurship.

6 TEAM: RLabs currently employs more than 200 young people on a full/part-time basis. SPACES: RLabs currently offers a variety of creative spaces where it offers its programmes. (E.g. Youth Cafes, Smart-Ups, Innovation Hubs etc.) MODEL: The RLabs model is rooted in community with a strong focus on developing people first. We also adopt a multi-generational approach in our programmes.

Offering to communities Training: We offer innovative learning programmes that provide unemployed and underemployed youth FREE access to world class training. 7 Innovation Lab: Platforms for communities to create solutions to social problems, with public, private and academic institutions. Incubation: Startup incubation, mentorship, support and funding to social entrepreneurs. Incubation: RLabs have incubated and supported more than 1,000 small businesses. Living Lab: RLabs through its partnerships have launched a variety of social innovations such as its mobile chat counseling platforms, jobs listing applications and Youth Cafes. Academy: RLabs annually offers thousands of scholarships to community members including skills, personal development and entrepreneurship training.

Training (RLabs Academy / Youth Cafés) ▪ >40,000 people trained, representing approximately 20,000 families / households ▪ >5,000 people trained, through the RLabs Academy and Youth Cafe programmes over the past 12 months. ▪ 75% of graduates employed or economically empowered after a training program Innovation Labs/ Incubation ▪ 5 million users have benefited of our Living Lab and social enterprise mobile and Internet services. ▪ 35 mobile/internet solutions offered for social change ▪ 1 million users of services ranging from counseling, information services to access to job opportunities over the past 12 months ▪ >3,900 people connected with economic opportunities/jobs over our Jobs Platform, UUSI. RLabs SA Current Impact Economic value created by community during 2014/15 were $22.3 Million
