9 Summer Jobs +: Opportunities for the Workforce System About Summer Jobs +  Call to action for businesses, non-profits, and government to work together to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth (16 to 24 years of age) in the summer of 2012  Goal of reaching 250,000 employment opportunities by the start of summer  No new funds associated with this initiative. No changes to the Workforce Investment Act Youth Program.  Summer Jobs + Bank, a one-stop Internet search tool for youth to access postings for any participating employers -

10 Summer Jobs +: Opportunities for the Workforce System About Summer Jobs +  Menu of options from which businesses can choose to assist low-income youth in accessing the skills and opportunities necessary for success in the workforce  Three key ways or “pathways” businesses and organizations can engage in include –Learn and Earn: paid internships and/or permanent positions that provide on-the-job training –Life Skills: soft skills, such as communication, time management and teamwork, including resume writing or interview workshops and mentorship programs –Work Skills: Provide youth insight into the world of work to prepare for employment - job shadow days and unpaid internships

11 Summer Jobs +: Opportunities for the Workforce System Opportunities for the Workforce System  Released on March 27, 2012, Training and Employment Notice (TEN) 35-11: Opportunities for the Workforce System to Support the Summer Jobs + Initiative.  The workforce system could: –Connect existing WIA Youth to employers: work with youth to identify “pathways” opportunities of interest and assist them in connecting with employers. –Support employers serving WIA Youth: help businesses understand the Summer Jobs + “pathways” options and work together to determine how best to accomplish the “pathways” commitments they have made. –Recruit and outreach to employers: reach out to employers, highlight the importance of the effort and ask them to commit to one or more of the “pathways” options.
