According to Nunan (1991) adequate vocabulary is important for successful second language use Gairns and Redman, 1986, Lewis, 1993, and Schmitt and McCarthy, 1997 cited in Fowle (2002) also believed that vocabulary learning should be central to the language programs The comparative study between the traditional and multimedia- enhanced read aloud vocabulary instruction found that there was no added benefit of multimedia-enhanced for non- English-language learners (non-ELLs)but there was a positive effect for ELLs on a researcher-designed measure and on a measure of a general vocabulary knowledge (Silverman & Hines, 2009).  to investigate the effectiveness of learning vocabulary through the use of computer-based courseware  to identify the student’s attitude towards the use of computer-based courseware in learning basic vocabulary sets and the relationship with their academic performance GLOCALL 2010 “ Creative & Innovative Towards Excellence”  only on the teaching and learning of vocabulary sets  specifically for Form One level  courseware used in the research was limited only to words that are based on the context of relevant vocabulary elements

Quantitative case study an experimental and a survey design Subjects 60 Form One secondary school students at a rural school in Negeri Sembilan 30 students randomly selected from each group (Class 1A & Class 1B) - intermediate to advanced levels based on their Year Six UPSR results in primary schools.  Form 1A -control group 1  Form 1B - experimental group “ Creative & Innovative Towards Excellence” GLOCALL 2010

#1 EXPERIMENT to analyze the students’ level of knowledge of the vocabulary sets as a result of being exposed to 2 different methods of teaching Control group = printed handouts Experimental group = English computer-based courseware TESTS 25 items of basic vocabulary sets  similar structured pre-tests and post-tests 1 test =5 basic vocabulary sets (types of occupations, family tree, types of hobbies, types of sizes, shapes and colours and types of inventions) “ Creative & Innovative Towards Excellence” GLOCALL 2010

#2 QUESTIONNAIRE measure the attitude toward the use of English computer-based courseware in developing vocabulary skills 3 Sections  student’s profile  English language background  7 statements – vocabulary lessons 4-point rating scale total score of 28 points (4 x 7 items of Part C) =a very positive attitude minimum 7 points = a very negative attitude “ Creative & Innovative Towards Excellence” GLOCALL 2010
