The background of the subjects Subjects: freshmen of non-English majors Number: 10 male 5 female 5 Age: Departments: Physics and Mathematics

Lacks 60% Ss come from the city 90 % Ss can understand teachers and the conversation

Motivational  70 % Ss want to learn English even if it is not compulsory  70 % Ss like English very much  80 % Ss want to learn English in the morning  60 % Ss use one hour to learn English each day  90 % Ss turn to class or references when meeting difficulties  All the Ss think western culture is helpful  80 % Ss think they have few or none opportunities to use English out of class

Wants 80 % Ss want to pass TOEFL and communicate with others in English 90 % Ss learn English to find a good job or for other purposes 60 % Ss want to improve their speaking ability

Materials  80% Ss want to use textbooks which meet their favor.  They can use English freely.  Some make complaint about teaching methods and settings where they learn English  60%Ss think their textbooks are OK but need improvement  70% Ss hope to learn English through Movie and TV back

Conclusions and implications  Most Ss have a strong motivation and high goals.They are interested in English and western culture and willing to spend time on English.They think good English means good future.  It also implies that there are some discrepancies between their learning needs and target needs
