Information About the Event September 11, 1973 The Combined Chilean Forces (the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Carabineros) overthrew Allende's government in a coup and Allende then committed suicide. The coup was led by a four-man junta headed by Army Chief of Staff Augusto Pinochet, who eventually assumed the office of president.

Information About the Event Committed to eliminating Marxism, the junta suspended parliament, banned political activity, and severely curbed civil liberties. Pinochet's brutal dictatorship led to the imprisonment, torture, disappearances, execution, and expulsion of thousands of Chileans. A government report in 2004 indicated that almost 28,000 people had been tortured during his rule, and at least 3,200 murders and disappearances had taken place. (The New York Times)

Human Rights Violations Murder Torture Kidnapping People who "disappeared." Rape The woman standing next to the list was imprisoned for nearly a month at the National Stadium. The list is of some of the names of the women prisoners held at the National Stadium. One of the dungeon-like dressing rooms at the cycling track, where prisoners were taken for the most severe torture sessions.

Resolution of the Event Augusto was recovering from back surgery in a private hospital and was served with an arrest warrant filed through Interpol by Spanish judges who wanted him extradited to Madrid. Arrested in London on October 16th, Augusto was extradited to Madrid to be tried for the crimes of genocide, terrorism, and torture. The Spanish judge then put him on house arrest. A court determined that Augusto was to sick and frail to stand trial, so he never stood trial for any of his crimes. Died December 10th, 2006.

Global Consequences of the Event Since 1988, the progress of human rights trials have improved. This event elevated and transformed the principle of universal jurisdiction allowing international communities to pursue the prosecution of dictators, torturers, and mass murders beyond the borders of their home.

Personal Statement The tragedy of Augusto Pinochet's reign is an event that should always be remembered around the world. The consequences of his rule of Chile brought pain and suffering to many and we must fight to keep tyrants of his stature away from positions of authority.
