Presentation transcript:

How do they occur? Tsunamis are created by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions; it can happen under the ocean or on land. If the disruption is on the ocean floor either the Earths crustal plates are pushed up to create mountains, that is called a under water volcano. The under water volcano spills magma out onto the ocean making a huge amount of water, creating a wave. A Tsunami can travel across the ocean at speeds up to 450 miles per hour; the Tsunami slows down when it gets to shallow water around a coast line. When the wave slows the energy in it has to go somewhere, so the wave becomes bigger reaching up 30 meters or 100 feet.

Communities that were affected

The largest Tsunami: On July the 9th of 1958, an avalanche that landed in Lituya Bay,Alaska,USA, created the largest recorded Tsunami. It was 1,720 feet (524 m) high. And was almost bigger than the tallest building on earth. Biggest building on earth called: “The Burj Dubai”
