What is knitting? Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn may be turned into cloth or other fine crafts.

What do we need for knitting? Knitting may be done by hand or by machine.

Knitting in the world history The first knitted things were found in ancient Egypt in the 6 th century BC.

Men were the first who started knitting things.

At first knitting was just a piece of art. When William Li (1589) invented a knitting machine, which was very popular in France, it became a craft. In the 19th century knitting machines were widely used all over the world and everyone thought knitting by hand will disappear. However it didn’t happen. People valued hand made knitted clothes even more.

In the ancient Lithuania the Balts (the tribe of ancient Lithuania) were knitting with wooden crotchets, later they started using metal crotchets and finally metal knitting-needles appeared. Knitting in Lithuania’s history

The first knitted things were belts that were used by men to muffle up their legs. Later people started knitting everything: socks, gloves, sweaters, vests, wristlets, caps, the parts of the woven clothes.

Patterns and colors depended on the purpose of a knitted thing. For summer season people used to knit from linen and cotton, for winter season – from wool.

The most common patterns were either plant (lily, rue, tulip, clover) or geometrical (square, line, rhombus, stars, snowflakes) patterns.

At the beginning of this century a lot of knitting machines appeared in Lithuania. But they couldn’t compete with hand made knitting. It is popular again and probably it will be in the future.
