Improvement in Quality of Radiotherapy for Frequent Cancers Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Cancer Hospital Manni Huang

Foreword

Foreword  Cancer patients is increasing in China.  Treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy.  Radiotherapy is a crucial component, particularly in the advance cancer.  The radiotherapy quality assurance is very important to improve the treatment outcomes and decrease morbidity and mortality.

Frequent Malignancies Malignancies in China in China

Frequent Malignancies in China  Lung  Stomach  Breast  Cervix  Esophagus  Liver  Recta  Head and neck  Leukemia  Prostate

Frequent Malignancies in China  Radiotherapy is one of treatment modalities.  Though the cases of some cancer (e.g. cervical cancer) have decreased in the past 20 years, yet younger patients of this kind are increasing.

Current Status of ofRadiotherapy

Current Status of Radiotherapy Human resources and equipment resources are not distributed on a severity average, because of the deficiency of hygiene resources and large demand for radiation personal.

Current Status of Radiotherapy There are high-level medical doctors, medical physicists, RTTs and modern equipment in some large cancer treatment centers, but in some little hospitals, the equipment is simple and professional workers on department of radiotherapy are fewer.

Current Status of Radiotherapy Supervision regulations have been performed in the eighties. Today, there are training course regarding position on radiation personal and academic course regarding radiation physics and radiobiology.

Current Status of Treatment Equipment In the most hospitals, there are Brachytherapy and Teletherapy, including mould room, Simulator, Cobalt-60 and Linear Accelerator (single-energy, multi- energy).

Current Status of Treatment Equipment In several cancer treatment centers, besides the above mention, there are equipment containing intraoperative radiotherapy and modern imaging-based treatment planning for IMRT and other special procedures. On the contrary, in some hospitals there are only Brachytherapy and/or Cobalt-60 or single-energy Linear Accelerator.

Current Status of Radiotherapy Equipment Maintenance and Repairs o Radiotherapy equipment maintenance and repairs is to ensure their normal operation. The most equipment repairs are implemented by suppliers, while the daily equipment maintenance is implemented by physicists and RTTs.

Current Status of Radiotherapy Technologists o The most RTTs have passed training course. They are responsible for maintaining and operating the equipment. They also know well about radiotherapy.

Medical Physicists o In china, there are about more than 400 medical physicists. They are responsibility for equipment maintenance and treatment planning. They also understand information of radiotherapy.

Current Status of Radiation Oncologists o Clinical doctor responsibility is to manage and decide the program of treatment, including radiotherapy planning and medicines.

Current Status of Radiation Nurses o Radiation nurses focus their minds on caring of the patients.

Current Status of Education and Training o Training course regarding position on radiation personal and academic course regarding radiation physics and radiobiology are our important courses.

Current Status of Clinical Quality Control and Quality Assurance o Supervision regulations on clinical quality control and quality assurance have been performed.

Our Expectation Expectation

Our Expectation In order to make level of radiotherapy in China contact with international level, with the help of national and international institutions, we are to introduce advanced radiotherapy equipment and train professional workers in radiotherapy.

Radiotherapy Equipment We intend to introduce advanced radiotherapy equipment to some cancer treatment centres, such as teletherapy and brachytherapy equipment containing modern imaging-based treatment program, heavy particle accelerator.

Human Resources We hope to participate in international meeting, learn training course. We also hope to send professional people engaging in radiotherapy to foreign countries where we can acquire the knowledge on radiation physics, radiobiology and radiotherapy, especially on IMRT and brachytherapy with 3-D planning. We have arranged various training course at home to improve our quality of radiotherapy.
