Criterion C- Further Mathematical Processes
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE WHAT IS NEEDED TO ACHIEVE 5 POINTS: C. Mathematical processes By: Nisleidys Gonzalez
Sketches Sketches will not be considered a correct mathematical processes Must use rulers If there is no 2 simple math processes, the 2 further math processes will be considered simple
POINTS 0 points: No mathematical processes or people who copied from book with effort to have their own data 1 point: Carried out at least 2 simple math processes but are just average. Includes- Percentages, graphs, trigonometry, bar charts, pie charts, mean, etc. Calculations just with technology = NO 2 points: Minimum of 2 simple math processes carried out correctly 3 points: Must have 2 simple math processes but HAVE TO BE RELEVANT! 4 points: Simple math processes must be correct. Have to have 1 further processes carried ou1`t( Errors are allowed) 5 points: Everything ( simple and further processes) have to be error- free! If there is any information or data within limited scope, points will not be given.
Examples of Acceptable vs. Poor IA’s By: Dayana Umana
Acceptable IA Two simple relevant mathematical processes and one further relevant mathematical process have been carried out thoroughly without any mistakes C:\Users\Dayana\Documents\good ia example.pdf C:\Users\Dayana\Documents\good ia example 2.pdf
Poor IA The student did not include any mathematical processes. The student may not have done the mathematical processes right or they do not have any relevance to the information. C:\Users\Dayana\Documents\bad example of ia.pdf C:\Users\Dayana\Documents\bad ia example 2.pdf
Criterion C. Checklist Mathematical Processes
Sophisticated Mathematical Processes ✔ IA must include one “sophisticated” math process Can include correlation line and line of best fit, or Chi-Squared Test Process must be shown in the assignment by hand
Simple Mathematical Processes ✔ Must include two “simple” mathematical processes Can include finding the mean and standard deviation, as well as charts and graphs Processes are necessary, but do not guarantee a top score in this category
Other Important Points ✔ All Mathematical processes must be shown by hand? Processes used should be relevant for the type of data collected Double check your work!
Mathematical Processes Michael Hernandez
Simple Mathematical Processes These are “standard” mathematical processes Must include at least 2 If a project contains no simple math processes the first 2 further math processes will be assessed as simple Examples are Mean, Median, Mode, and Range Probability Frequency tables Bar charts Pie charts
Further Mathematical Processes These are “sophisticated” math processes For further math processes, full work must be shown by hand Must include at least 1 Examples are Lines of best fit and correlation Frequency density histograms Standard deviation Chi squared test
Chi squared test of independence Collect at least 100 data points Demonstrate counts instead of percentages Sums Conversions (%->counts) DO NOT use expected values less than 5 Use Yates’ continuity correlation if testing with a 2 x 2 contingency table Bar graph –Simple Process Mathematical Studies- Standard Level Textbook: Pgs
Chi squared test of independence Formulas
Linear Regression Analysis Used when correlation coefficient is high Collect at least 30 pts Scatterplot with line of best fit (simple process) Include calculation of r and r² with interpretations of each Include equation of regression line
Useful Formulas r²= (r)²
