National R4H Agenda  PURPOSE To provide focus and direction on health research and development efforts that will address the country’s priority health concerns To serve as a guide where policy makers, funding and donor agencies and researchers from public and private sectors; To assist in providing evidence based solutions to pressing national and County health problems To serve as basis to maximize resource utilization and minimize duplication of research efforts

R4H AGENDA RESEARCH PRIORITIES

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Major Research Areas Health financing Health service delivery Health technology development Socio-environmental health concerns

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Health financing Financial risk protection  How to eliminate, if not greatly reduce the amounts patients must pay out of pocket to avail of health services  How to provide Kenyans substantial financial risk protection.

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Health service delivery Improving access to quality health services  Novel ways of upgrading and equipping facilities to provide quality services  Novel ways of enhancing staff capacity thro’ a) improved conditions of service, and b) relevant training Focusing on national/county-specific health priorities including MDGs to identify knowledge gaps

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Health technology development Diagnostics Genomics/Molecular technology Drug discovery and development Functional foods Hospital equipment and biomedical devices Health ICT

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Health technology development Diagnostics  development of diagnostics (point of care and confirmatory) for priority infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases  for early detection and/or prediction of disease and mortality  will also look at genetic or biological markers associated with non-communicable diseases

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities Diagnostics (cont’d)  Priority diseases: Infectious diseasesNon-communicable diseases Malaria in pregnancy MDR/ XDR TB Drug-Resistant Malaria Influenza-like illness Neglected Tropical Diseases Sepsis HIV Hepatitis Myocardial infarction Colorectal cancer Stroke Diabetes Mellitus Breast cancer Autoimmune/Immunologic diseases or deficiencies

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Health technology development Genomics/molecular technology  Use of information in the human genome in the design of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostic devices or products.

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities Genomics…. (cont’d)  Priority diseases: CVD Infectious diseases (TB, dengue, influenza) Cancer (breast, lung, liver, cervical, colon) Diabetes Neurodegenerative diseases

NUHRA Research Priorities  Health technology development Functional foods  Research on the health benefits and safety assessment of food or food components in reducing risk for disease occurrence, specifically lifestyle related diseases such as CVD, diabetes, and cancer

NUHRA Research Priorities  Health technology development Drug discovery and development  discovery of new drugs which can be developed up to the pre-clinical stage  discovery of compounds or molecular drug targets (genomics) that can serve as candidates for drug development  drugs for common infectious diseases and lifestyle related disorders

NUHRA Research Priorities  Health technology development Hospital equipment and biomedical devices  development of affordable, safe, and reliable hospital equipment and biomedical devices

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Health technology development Health ICT  development of user-friendly ICT solutions to accelerate the gathering and processing of health and related information for policymaking, and to deliver quality health care services

R4H AGENDA Research Priorities  Socio-Environmental health concerns Environmental and climate change  Understanding how disease transmission is affected by environmental (biological, chemical) and socio- cultural factors. Health social sciences (including community development)  understanding how socio-cultural factors affect health and dynamics of disease.
