The Meaning of Percents

Percents Essential Question: What are percents and how are they related to fractions and decimals? Common Core Obj./Student Friendly Terms: (CC. 6.RP.3) Students will be able to read, write, and identify percents of a whole, between 0% and 100%, with at least 80% accuracy.

Vocabulary: Ratio: a comparison of two numbers that can be expressed as a fraction. Proportion: a statement where one ratio is equal to another ratio. Fraction: a number written in the form N/D, where N is the numerator and D is the denominator. Decimal: any non-whole number written in the base 10 system. Percent: a special ratio comparing a number to 100.Percents

First Things First… The term PERCENT is very loosely defined as: Percents

First Things First… And if you think in terms of Latin word origins, the word cent means 100: Percents

Example 1: Identifying Percents A) Since 6 out of 100 boxes are shaded we can say this is 6%Percents

Example 1: Identifying Percents B) Since 43 out of 100 boxes are shaded we can say this is 43%Percents

Example 1: Identifying Percents C) Since 150 out of 100 boxes are shaded we can say this is Percents150%

One In the Same… 1) Percents, fractions, and decimals are interrelated 2) They are actually just three different ways of expressing the same number 3) For example: Percents

Example 2: Changing Percents to Fractions A) 37 % *Hint: Always think of a percent as something out of 100Percents

Example 2: Changing Percents to Fractions B) 65 % *Hint: Always think of a percent as something out of 100Percents

Example 2: Changing Percents to Fractions C) 135 % *Hint: Always think of a percent as something out of 100 1Percents

Example 3: Changing Percents to Decimals A) *Hint: Move the decimal 2 digits to the left 95 % 0.95Percents

Example 3: Changing Percents to Decimals B) *Hint: Move the decimal 2 digits to the left 65.5 % 0.655Percents

Example 3: Changing Percents to Decimals C) *Hint: Move the decimal 2 digits to the left 135 % 1.35Percents

Now Lets Create A Conversion Chart 10% = 0.1 = 1 / 10 20% = 0.2 = 1 / 5 30% = 0.3 = 3 / 10 40% = 0.4 = 2 / 5 50% = 0.5 = 1 / 2 60% = 0.6 = 3 / 5 70% = 0.7 = 7 / 10 80% = 0.8 = 4 / 5 90% = 0.9 = 9 / % = 1.0 = 1 Percents

Summary: Always remember that percents, decimals, and fractions are nothing more than three ways to write the same number Percents
