Cold Desert-Tundra Climate Region

Advantages and disadvantages of the tundra

Tundra Summer days are long: on at least one day a year, inside the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set. A variety of animals that can be hunted for their meat and fur, for example polar bears, seals, beavers and reindeer, all live in this climate. Advantages Because it is so cold, there are few bacteria, viruses and flies to spread disease.

Tundra Animals

Tundra People who make a living from herding animals have to be nomadic It is too cold to grow crops so food has to be brought in, which is expensive Disadvantages Just below the surface the soil is permanently frozen (permafrost) The climate also makes living conditions very difficult In winter there is at least one day inside the Arctic Circle when the sun does not rise

The people of the Tundra During the time we spend studying the hot desert we focused on plants and animals and how they have adapted. Now we will look at the people of the Tundra and their lifestyle.BBC - Human Planet Explorer - Arctic (pictures, video, facts & news)

Starter: Number 1. What are some of the disadvantages of living in the Tundra. Number 2. Why is there no vegetation in the Tundra? Where will people get fruit and veg? Number 2. What are some of the advantages of living in the Tundra? Number 2. Describe the location of the Tundra. Number 1. What type of animals are found in the Tundra. Number 1. Describe the climate of the Tundra. With the person sitting beside you choose who is number 1 and 2. You will answer the questions that come up on the board and tell your partner the answer.

Problems caused by climate Blizzards, fog and ice make travel very risky Car engines must be kept running all day Car tyres shatter in the cold Bare flesh will freeze in minutes and any flesh that touches metal will freeze onto it Little daylight for 6 months a year
