Station Identifiers ICG-WIGOS-5 Steve Foreman, C/DRMM WMO; OBS/WIS

Contents  WIGOS station identifiers  Guidance on using WIGOS station identifiers  Decision ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 2

WIGOS Station Identifiers ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 3

Structure of WIGOS Station Identifier ComponentRoleInitial Range WIGOS Identifier Series Allows future expansion 0 Issuer of identifierAllow delegation of issuing identifiers Issue numberSub-delegation, or absorb historic ids Local IdentifierAllocated to station16 characters 0 = WIGOS Station Id = WWW fixed land 600 = Paraguay = WWW fixed land 600 = Paraguay e.g. drifting buoy identifiers, regional offices e.g. drifting buoy identifiers, regional offices (Asunçion) SGAS (Asunçion) (Asunçion) SGAS (Asunçion) ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 4

WIGOS station identifiers Issued by  Members  Secretary-General  If no Member able to issue Identifier and station operator has committed to operate to standards in Technical Regulations Conditions  Commit to providing WIGOS metadata ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 5

Guidance ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 6

Guidance on WIGOS station identifiers Draft available on web ( Identifiers) Identifiers  Issuer of Identifier  ISO 3 digit code for Member countries  Listed in Table for (known) WMO and partner programmes Approaches to allocating station identifiers  Issue number  record re-use of existing identifiers  sub-delegate to national organizations Representing in TDCF reports  Not possible in TAC ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 7

Recommendation  Background  A station can have many WIGOS identifiers  Recommend 1.Members do not issue new WIGOS identifiers for a station that already has one. 2.WIGOS provides a look up for equivalent station identifiers 3.For observation reports, use the WIGOS identifier associated with the Programme requiring the report ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 8

Decision ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 9

Decision How should the guidance on WIGOS metadata be published?  Fully in the Guide on WIGOS?  By a reference in the Guide on WIGOS to a set of web pages? ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 10

Summary  WIGOS station identifiers  Guidance on using WIGOS station identifiers  Decision ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 11

Other WIGOS identifiers Additional guidance sought

Exchanging WIGOS metadata  WIGOS metadata records evolution of observing conditions over time  Divided into groups where (most) metadata remains unchanged  Split into sub-groups corresponding to different observation types  Some components of metadata are the same across many metadata records  For example the contact details for the manager of a group of observing sites  Proposal – a standard set of identifiers to allow these to be referred to unambiguously ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 13

WIGOS identifiers ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers one else will use this nType of identifier 1 = Equipment 2 = Observation collection 3 = Observation segment 4 =Contact information issuerUnique identifier for issuer issue_numberNational system used local_identifierAllocated by national system

Request  Document in  Guide to WIGOS?  Manual on Codes?  Is the approach right?  The identifiers look like URLs but do not have to “work”  May need to use something other than ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 15

Thank you for your attention ICG-WIGOS-5: WIGOS station identifiers 16
