usage Masks can have many uses in the modern world and antiquity. They have long been used for many different things like: rituals, theater, for fun: (Halloween & Carnival), medical/ health protection, sports, disguises, and even for fashion.

cultural & historical usage Masks have different uses in different cultures. In Bali and the Southeast, masks are created for dance rituals. In Africa, many different masks have been created for tribal religious ceremonies. And in Europe, masks are often used in regional folk celebrations.

modern day usage In the US today, much of the masks you see are for costuming or in movies and theater. Makeup and costumes have in fact become an important job field in the arts.

making masks Masks are often formed by sculpting in clay. Once finished, the clay sculpture can be used to make a mold which can then be used to create the mask.

creating a mask Your next assignment is to choose a part of your personality that you’d like to represent. This element may be something from your personality paper, or something different. Using this as inspiration, you are to create a mask which shows rather than disguises that part of your personality as your face is disguised.

for example For instance, I might choose to represent my love of art. In order to do this, I might create a mask that looks like a palette. Or I might pay homage to my favorite artists through pictures on the mask, or the shape of it. Think outside the box! (Add, subtract, combine, fantasize, mythologize, transfer, change scale, etc.!)
