Geographic and Historical Notes Martin County is located in Southern Indiana and is bordered by the following counties: Greene to the north, Lawrence to the east and northeast, Orange to the east and southeast, Dubois to the south and southwest, and Daviess to the west. U.S. Highways 231, 50 and 150 cross the county.. Martin County is mainly part of the Kentucky and Indiana Sandstone and Shalle Hills and Valleys land resource area, although the far northwestern top lies within the Southern Illinois and Indiana Thin Loess and Till Plain land resource area. Elevation is feet. The area is features oak and hickory trees. The landscape features very steep slopes, except for land bordering the East Fork of the White River where it is nearly level. This County is in the Central Time Zone and observes DST. Temperatures range from about 20 ٥ - 40 ٥ in January and from about 63 ٥ - 88 ٥ in July. Average annual precipitation is 43 inches and snowfall from 15 inches. The first freeze of the season typically is around October 15-20, except for east- central Martin County (October 10-15). The last freeze occurs April 20-25, except for the east-central sector (April 25-30). There are approximately growing days. Livestock and grain are the primary agricultural activities, with about a third of the land in farms and less than half of that in cash crops. Livestock include cattle/calves, hogs/pigs, and to a lesser extent hens/pullets and turkeys. Main natural resources include gypsum, petroleum and forestland. Water resources include various lakes/reservoirs (including Lake Greenwood and West Boggs Creek Lake), creeks (Haw, Blue, Lost Big, Beaver, Indian, Sulpher, Turkey, and Boggs), and the East Fork of the White River. Communities include the city of Loogootee, and the towns of Shoals (the county seat) and Crane. 3.
