What got you here?

What is the point of our business?

What kinds of things do you know about instruction?  Are you familiar with instructional practices  Lecture  Small group  Are you familiar with what is being taught in the classrooms you observe?  Reading  Math  Calculus  Are you aware of how kids at your particular level learn?  Interactive  Small groups  discussion

What kinds of things do you need to know?  What kinds of things could you do to learn more about the teaching and learning process?  Attend trainings  Observe/learn from an expert in your building  Ask questions  Observe other administrators/leaders  Seek out an expert

As a leader…  Are things in place to allow quality instruction to occur?  Is there time for teachers to do the things they need to do to teach students  Do schedules support this  Adult schedules  Student schedules  Do the teachers have the resources/knowledge to accomplish the task?  How do you accomplish this task

How do you know ??  Monitoring Instruction  You have to intentionally observe and participate in instruction to monitor the effectiveness of instruction.  Ask thoughtful questions  Why did you choose to teach your lesson this way?  What lead you to make the decisions you did when planning for instruction?  How would you do this differently?

Academic Coaches What is their purpose? Assess instruction within the school utilizing teachscape tool, performance assessment, observation, etc. Identify and prioritize top 3 areas of concern Work with administration to develop a plan of action to address areas of concern Begin implementation of detailed steps to impvove identified instructional areas of concern Progress monitor (utilizing effectiveness data) to monitor effectiveness of improvement steps. Identify what worked and what did not Monitor and adjust Modify instructional plan if needed based upon data and need implementation of revised plan-if needed based upon data and need Progress monitor effectiveness data determine effectiveness of improvment steps and identification of areas of need Monitor and Adjust Develop a plan based upon data for the 2013/2014 school year

Hear what they have to say!  Be willing to be flexible!
