LBNE Remote Handling Conceptual Design Issues for ORNL Collaboration Kick-off Meeting at ORNL 1/6/2010

Quick Introduction to LBNE Beamline Vaia’s Talk… Target Hall design layout is in state of flux Was 3 horn optics; Now 2 horn optics Was side-load for Target/Horn 1; Now top load considered Was 90” steel and 78” concrete; now 52” and 80” And more coming soon! Need to make sure that Remote Handling issues have input to Target Hall/Pile layout. Current plans assume short target lifetimes

Remote Handling Conceptual Design Areas Rapid Target Change-out Target insertion into Horn 1? Alignment? Target & Module as a unit? Beam-on Access Work Cell/Transfer Cell Transfer of components (modules?) from Target Hall into Beam-on Work Cell? Work cell equipment? Transfer up-shaft? Above Rock (sub-surface) Component Storage Building Transfer of components to Morgue? Morgue design? Expandability? Work Cell necessary?

Rapid Target Change-out Target is inserted into first portion of Horn 1 The LBNE Target is about 1 m long and 3 cm diameter Horn 1 is about 3 m long Clearance between the Target OD and the Horn 1 ID should be minimized (2-3 mm) “Rapid” has not been defined Target lifetime may be as short as 3 months 3-6 shifts (2 shifts/day) is hoped for Rapid horn change-out is desired but not necessary

Early conceptual drawing to guide IHEP engineers

Target Insertion Options Mount Target onto Horn Requires removing Horn from Chase to replace Target Much easier to do alignment Insert Target into Horn in Chase Move Target separate from Target Module Have had problems doing this for NuMI Alignment is critical and difficult Move Target and Module together as unit Alignment is critical Allows prepping a spare module and target ahead of time and doing quick swap out Must develop instrumentation and guides to ensure alignment during insertion

LBNE Target Insertion Idea

LBNE Target Insertion Idea - Plan Filler Module Target Module

LBNE Target Insertion Idea “isothermal” support points Frame and Insertion Drive Target and Module

Beam-on Access Work/Transfer Cell Work Cell at Downstream end of Target Hall Detach/Attach Components from/to Modules Pass components into Beam-on access Work Area (and vice versa) Allow some minor repair and/or disassembly Allow safe passage to near-surface storage facility Pass through entire module/component assembly Allows easier (rapid) swap-out of Target/module assembly Target and module can be pre-aligned while running beam Not as desired for large Horns and Horn modules Large shield door with air seal required

Work/Transfer Cell Idea

Work Cell Elevation-Side

Work Cell Idea Plan

Passing Modules - Turntable Massive Turntable Cannot service while beam is on Air seal?

Passing Modules - Gantry Requires Requires Large Sliding Door Remote Drive Mechanism

Passing Modules - Trolley Requires Requires Large Sliding Door Remote Drive Mechanism Door seals around rails? Or removable rails?

Passing Modules - Upshaft Requires No Beam-on Access Area excavation Do hot handling in near surface storage facility Requires crane transfer of heavy highly radioactive modules on a frequent basis Will components stay in alignment?

Near Surface Storage Facility See pdf file for dwgs Need a storage conceptual design Need expansion flexibility (with stored radioactive items in place) Need work cell (if we use upshaft solution) Could need storage for up to 60 targets, 20 horns, 10 baffles, 10 primary beam windows, other hot items! Need to provide an off-site disposal route

Summary We have identified three areas for ORNL’s input Which areas are good matches? What can we afford? How do we define scope? We need conceptual design, preliminary (high level) cost estimate and schedule for design and construction
