Key Stage Results 2004 South Tyneside MBC

Key Stages  Compulsory education is divided into four key stages in England: Key Stage 15-7 year olds Key Stage year olds Key Stage year olds Key Stage year olds

National Tests National Tests are conducted each year at the end of each Key Stage. This gives rise to annual test results for each key stage. These tests have now been in operation for a number of years and trends in performance over years supports our analysis of performance, as well as each year’s results.

Test Results in 2004  Headlines –We are very pleased to announce that South Tyneside schools have performed well at KS1, KS2 and made good progress in many areas of its GCSE (KS4) results –At KS2 we have made particularly good gains in English attainment, and have been praised by the Minister for School Standards for achieving a top position nationally in this area.

Information on Test Results Russell Sanderson Information Manager Lifelong Learning and Leisure Department

Introduction  Preliminary data –Please note that the following is based on early data and is subject to change –Additionally, KS3 data is, at the present point, not confirmed by the DfES and a further report will be made when final data for all four Key Stages is available –However, it should be noted that KS3 performance nationally has dipped and we are likely to reflect this

Key Stage 1 Test Results  Key Stage 1 This year, South Tyneside took part in a pilot where Teacher Assessment replaced tests for 7 year olds. In this assessment, South Tyneside maintained its standards at slightly above the national average.

Key Stage 2 Results  This year, South Tyneside made significant improvements in all subjects, particularly English, where an 8% rise was achieved (compared with 2% nationally) making the English progress here the biggest improvement nationally.  South Tyneside schools are now above the national average in English, Maths and Science at Key Stage 2.

Key Stage 3 Results  Due to processing difficulties at the QCA where marked papers are processed, Key Stage 3 data is not complete at the time of this report.

Key Stage 4 (GCSE) Results  Early data received from schools indicates that the main measure of GCSE performance, the proportion of pupils achieving 5+A*-C in mainstream secondary schools has risen again from 43.1% in 2002 to 44.5% in 2003 and now to 47.1% for 2004, a rise of 2.6% in the last year, compared with a nationally reported improvement of 1.1%

Further Report  When final data is available a full and more detailed report will be made available
