Presentation transcript:

The NZ Curriculum and School Guidance Counsellors The Education System has finally caught up with what School Guidance Counsellors have been doing for ages... “The only time my education was interrupted was while I was at school.” Winston Churchill

The aims of this presentation are to: Stimulate deeper thinking Promote discussion Ask questions To challenge SGCs to engage with the NZ Curriculum The intention is not to: Criticise actions of individuals or groups Provide answers or solutions Be more than a starting point Tell the history of the NZ Curriculum

QUESTION: What’s the NZ Curriculum got to do with counselling?

These are some of our ideas Guidance work provides learning support in the development of aspects of the NZ Curriculum Working with students towards full and satisfying lives has always been at the core of what we do The Curriculum is the business of schools and SGC’s are charged with supporting schools’ educational outcomes

Communication To increase effectiveness, teachers and SGC’s need to understand each other. The shared language of the curriculum can facilitate common goals Communicating the link between Guidance work to the Curriculum ensures easier access to resources. This may mean more money and/or staff to carry out the mission.

We need to remember... Our role in schools is multifaceted. All the roles we have in school should contribute to the achievements of students. We are specialist resource people for the whole school Our unique perspectives enable us to work alongside teachers in many areas of the NZ Curriculum So what is the buzz about ?

THE OVERARCHING VISION Our Education System will produce Young people who will be: Confident Connected Actively involved Lifelong Learners

The Key Competencies… Thinking Relating to others Using symbols & text Managing self Participating & contributing What do these mean in the context of the work we do?

THINKING Creating Making Sense Deciding Constructing Being curious Problem solving AND.....

RELATING TO OTHERS Interacting Listening Negotiating Sharing ideas Being open to new ideas Accepting diversity Co-operating /Competing AND....

USING LANGUAGE, SYMBOLS AND TEXT Writing Hearing Reading Interpreting Talking Using Technology AND...

MANAGING SELF Resourcefulness Reliability Resilience Organisational skills Being strategic Leading, following and being independent AND...

Key Competency Activity In groups look at one key competency For each competency (KC) ask the following …  What does having this KC look like? (How would you know someone was successful at this?)  What work do we do that contributes to this competency?

Forward Focus – discussion starters What do we do with this new knowledge about the NZC? Where are the gaps for you – either in understanding or practice of NZC? How can your skills contribute to the wider school?

Dr Seuss has a similar vision to those who wrote the NZC Congratulations!! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places You’re off and away! You have brains in your head You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself Any direction you choose. -Oh, The Places you’ll Go!-
