Where did the idea of missions came from? What does Mission mean to you? John 1:14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…” Missio Dei

Philippians 2:6-8 “ 6 though he (Jesus) was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself by taking on the form of a slave, being born in the likeness of men, and by sharing in human nature. 8 He humbled himself, by becoming obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross! Missio Dei

Did not regard equality with God (leaving privileges behind) Emptied Himself Took form of a slave (go as servers) Be in the likeness of men (Look like other men) Sharing in human nature (sharing cultural values and adopting cultural limitations) Humility (obedient to God and to the law of the nation) Jesus Modeled Mission

A Training Trip Matthew 10:1-42 “These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’” Opportunity to trust in the Lord in new ways Opportunity to exercise spiritual gifts Biblical Short-term Mission

An Encouragement Trip Ephesians 6:21-22 “So that you also may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord will tell you everything. I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage your hearts.” Encouragement and affirmation to Long-term Missionaries Connection between supporting churches and Long-term missionaries Biblical Short-term Mission

Be FAT: Faithful, Available, Teachable Come with a willingness to serve. Be totally in and willing to learn. Move out of your comfort zone to meet the needs. Avoid the “poor them” attitude Be all there Be involved every moment you are there Follow the rules Sometimes we may not understand why certain missions organizations do things they way they do, but there is usually a reason behind it. Show respect by doing it their way. Things to Remember

You are not the Savior, Jesus is. Be Proactive! If you see something that needs to be done do it. Some "jobs" might not seem glamorous. Washing dishes or stacking chairs might seem boring, but it needs to be done. Don’t make promises you can’t keep Take it all in Listen to the people you'll serve. Don't be afraid to tell them you will pray for them. Keep a prayer journal while on the trip. Christ will use this time to draw you closer to Him. Things to Remember
