WHAT ARE POLYGONS? Brought to you by powerpointpros.com

What is a Polygon? A polygon is a two-dimensional closed shape with straight sides that do not cross each other.

Examples of Polygons These shapes are all different types of polygons.

Examples of Shapes that are Not Polygons These shapes are not polygons because they aren’t closed shapes.

Examples of Shapes that are Not Polygons These shapes are not polygons because their sides aren’t straight; they’re curved.

Examples of Shapes that are Not Polygons These shapes are not polygons because their sides cross each other.

Names of Polygons Polygons have different names based on the number of sides that they have.

Triangles Triangles are polygons that have 3 sides This polygon has 3 sides, so it is a triangle!

More Examples of Triangles All of these polygons have 3 sides, so they’re all triangles!

Quadrilaterals Quadrilaterals are polygons that have 4 sides This polygon has 4 sides, so it is a quadrilateral! 4

More Examples of Quadrilaterals All of these polygons have 4 sides, so they’re all quadrilaterals!

Pentagons Pentagons are polygons that have 5 sides This polygon has 5 sides, so it is a pentagon! 4 5

More Examples of Pentagons All of these polygons have 5 sides, so they’re all pentagons!

Hexagons Hexagons are polygons that have 6 sides This polygon has 6 sides, so it is a hexagon! 4 5 6

More Examples of Hexagons All of these polygons have 6 sides, so they’re all hexagons!

Heptagons Heptagons are polygons that have 7 sides This polygon has 7 sides, so it is a heptagon!

More Examples of Heptagons All of these polygons have 7 sides, so they’re all heptagons!

Octagons Octagons are polygons that have 8 sides This polygon has 8 sides, so it is an octagon!

More Examples of Octagons All of these polygons have 8 sides, so they’re all octagons!

Nonagons Nonagons are polygons that have 9 sides This polygon has 9 sides, so it is a nonagon!

More Examples of Nonagons All of these polygons have 9 sides, so they’re all nonagons!

Decagons Decagons are polygons that have 1o sides This polygon has 10 sides, so it is a decagon!

More Examples of Decagons All of these polygons have 10 sides, so they’re all decagons!

Review/ Practice Now let’s review what we’ve learned!

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. What is a polygon? It is a two-dimensional shape that is closed and has straight sides that do not cross.

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. How many sides does a nonagon have? A nonagon has 9 sides.

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. How many sides does a pentagon have? A pentagon has 5 sides.

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. How many sides does a heptagon have? A heptagon has 7 sides.

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. What is the name of a polygon with 4 sides? The name of a polygon with 4 sides is “quadrilateral.”

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. What is the name of a polygon with 8 sides? The name of a polygon with 8 sides is “octagon.”

Review/ Practice Answer the following questions. What is the name of a polygon with 10 sides? The name of a polygon with 10 sides is “decagon.”

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. a triangle

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. a hexagon

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. a hexagon

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. a triangle

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. an octagon

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. a heptagon

Review/ Practice Tell the name of each polygon below. (Count its sides!) This polygon is _________________. a quadrilateral

Review/ Practice Tell why each shape below is not a polygon. This shape is not a polygon because… _________________________________. it is not a closed shape

Review/ Practice Tell why each shape below is not a polygon. This shape is not a polygon because… _________________________________. its sides cross each other

Review/ Practice Tell why each shape below is not a polygon. This shape is not a polygon because… _________________________________. its sides are not straight; they’re round

Great Job! You now know what polygons are, and you also know the names of different types of polygons with different numbers of sides!
