Job Satisfaction Within the Nursing Profession By: Kelly Deeney, RN Viterbo University

Job Satisfaction We all deserve to be happy with what we do!

Job Satisfaction P - Nurses I - Findings ways to improve or enhance job satisfaction within the medical workplace C - Current nurses whom are satisfied/dissatisfied with current job duties 0 - Creating positive work environment that improves job satisfaction to decrease employee turnover

Job Satisfaction A variety of education among my interviews  1 - Doctorate of Pharmacy  1 - MSN  3 - BSN’s  2 - RN’s  2 – LPN’s Departments  Obstetrics  Med-surg  ER  Adminisration  Pharmacist

Questions Do you feel nurse satisfaction within the workplace reflects on the patient’s outcome? In your opinion, what are some reason’s job satisfaction would decline? Describe a time when your department was criticized and how did you handle it? With the high demand for nurses, do you feel that job satisfaction will change in the future when baby boomers start to need more care?

Questions What are some ways to create a positive work environment to improve job satisfaction? Did you leave your last job because you were unhappy?

Do you feel nurse satisfaction at work reflects patient outcome? Yes – everyone’s response  “Happy patient = happy nurse” (BSN)  If unhappy, attitude reflects that which patients are able to pick up on (RN)  “Interaction is not the same if not happy. It effects the relationship with the patient” (Administrator)  “If not having a positive attitude, you won’t do the best you can” (Doctorate)

Reason’s for a decline in job satisfaction Doctor’s not respecting nurses (OB) Unfairness(OB, Med-Surg, ER) Taken advantage of (Med-Surg) Favoritism (Med- Surg) Patient to nurse ratio (Med –Surg, OB) Wage discrepancy (Med –Surg) EMAR implementation (Med-Surg) Co-worker Attitudes (Med-Surg, OB, ER) Conflicts with family (Administration) Responsibilities (Administration) Too many demands at once (Doctorate) Unhappy patients/customers (Doctorate) Hours (Med-Surg)

Causes for Job Dissatisfaction by Research Pay and benefits Lack of job clarity Lack of time for client care Lack of recognition Inadequate promotion/career opportunities Lack of communication

Department was criticized-How was it handled? In General-Evaluate situation to see what sent on and also look at both sides Sometimes not able to control a situation-Evaluate to see what could be done differently and delegate duties more appropriately Criticized on care-Listen to what they have to say and investigate/staff meeting Not everyone is perfect-Work as a team Labeling issue on medication-quit giving liquid form and now is capsule Faculty upset that 2 potlucks in weeks-listened to complaints and combined to 1 potluck Press Ganey (survey) to evaluate for possible changes Critized by physician d/t precipitous birth-went to upper management, copied papers, and stated facts on charting

With high demand for nurses, will job satisfaction be compromised in the future? 7 - yes 1 – (RN) 1 – Undecided “Cares towards patients will change- Admission will be faster and discharges will to sooner” More outpatient care (home care) Unrespected field by some people=burnt out nurses Acuity level will change “It’s already changed from years ago. It’s only going to get tougher” “Generation now feel they are entitled to more, but work less” No-”It has to do with the underlying values of the facility you work for”

Ways to create a positive work environment Interview Response Respect co-workers Use manners Encouragement from supervisors Compliments outweigh criticism Bonuses throughout year Follow-through with concerns from staff Open communication Treat staff equally Interview Response Focusing on quality, not quantity of care Have fun Potlucks Employee satisfaction survey Employee of month/year Recognition for longevity Don’t put blame on someone Good attitude by everyone

Ways to create a positive work environment Taking pride in the job Job security Interpersonal relationships with co-workers Autonomy Pay Feedback on performance Good relationship with supervisors Decision-making opportunities (Curtis & Glacken, 2012, p 655)

Job Satisfaction Castaneda and Scanlan (2014) states, “Autonomy and job satisfaction have een shown to be positively related due to scope of practice, interprofessional teamwork, support from management and co-workers, mutual trust between physicians and nurses, and education.” Kalisch and Lee (2014) states, “higher patient loads were negatively associated with satisfaction with the current job but not satisfaction with the career.”

Leave previous job because of job dissatisfaction? 3-Never changed jobs! Yes- Poor supervisor (favoritism) Inequality of job duties No- Office closing Family conflict with hours Moved

Question If being in a supervisor position, what are some ways that you would increase job satisfaction in order to decrease employee turnover?
