Review  1. What do you include in parentheses for an Internet source?  2. Do you need a signal phrase when citing an Internet source?  3. Where is your annotated bibliography located?  4. What two things are needed in an annotation?  5. What does “evaluate” mean?

Note to Teacher Ask students the following questions:  Can a contractor build a house without a blue print?  Could you put together a thousand piece puzzle without the picture on the box?

Outline of Research Paper Definition: An outline is a general plan of the material that is to be presented in a speech or a paper.

Why Create An Outline? Aids in the process of writing Helps you organize your ideas Presents your material in a logical form Shows the relationships among ideas in your writing Constructs an ordered overview of your writing

How Do I Create An Outline?  Brainstorm : List all the ideas that you want to include in your paper.  Organize : Group related ideas together.  Order : Arrange material in subsections from general to specific or from abstract to concrete.  Label : Create main and sub headings.

Example I. (Topic of Body Paragraph One) A. (evidence/support) B. (evidence/support) II. (Topic of Body Paragraph Two) A. (evidence/support) B. (evidence/support) III. (Topic of Body Paragraph Three) A. (evidence/support) B. (evidence/support)

 >Roman numerals (I,II,III) are the main ideas you want to establish in your essay. >Upper case letters (A,B,C) are the sub-points into which you can divide your main ideas.  Arabic numerals (1,2,3) are supporting details. Lower case letters (a,b,c) are discussions and explanations of those details.

Types of Outlines  The two main types of outlines are the topic outline and the sentence outline.  In the topic outline, the headings are given in single words or brief phrases.  In the sentence outline, all the headings are expressed in complete sentences.

Rules for Outlining 1.Each heading and subheading must have at least two parts. 2.Headings for parts of the paper of speech such as, Introduction and Conclusion, should not be used. 3.Be consistent. Do not mix up the two types of outlines. Use either whole sentences of brief phrases, but not both.

Note to Teacher…  Model for students how to create an outline using the “Death Penalty” as the topic.  This “Think Aloud” strategy will allow students to see how a person needs to brainstorm and organize their ideas.  An overhead projector works nicely!  After you finish creating the outline in front of the class, explain the next slide.

Example  Thesis: The death penalty should be abolished as it is not cost effective, does not deter crime, and is unfairly applied to minorities and the lower class. I. Background of death penalty A. Definition B. Origins II. Methods of Death A. Injection B. Electric chair C. Firing Squad Thesis comes first. Always discuss the background of your topic as your first body paragraph.

 Use the thesis statement you have created as your guide.  Next, write a rough draft of an outline.  Remember, clarify what points your are going to discuss in detail in your research paper.  Finish the 62 in-text citations  If finished early, begin researching your topic.
