Measurement

1.1 Fundamentals of measurement Develop an operational definition for the length of an object. Select appropriate measuring devices. Use the SI units to express length for the appropriate device. Collect and organize data into a table. Apply dimensional analysis for the appropriate unit conversion Consider accuracy of measuring device and express in appropriate value (digits)

Units and Standards

To measure something, choose a unit List some units What could these units be used to measure?

The value of a measurement depends on the unit chosen. Think of your height. What are the units you use? Suppose your height is 60 inches. Is that the same as 60 centimeters?

A measurement without a unit can't be compared to other measurements The numbers 60 or 30 or 3.5 do not mean anything as measurements. 60 inches or 30 liters or 3.5 grams are examples of valid measurements.

A measurement must have a unit.

You will be expected to include units with every measurement on your assignments, quizzes and tests.

English measurement compared to the metric system The United States uses the English system of measurement for masses, volumes and lengths. Examples are the pound, ton, quart, teaspoon, yard and mile.

English measurement compared to the metric system Most of the rest of the world, and all scientists, use the metric system of measurement for masses, volumes and lengths. Examples are the gram, kilogram, liter, milliliter, meter and kilometer.

English measurement compared to the metric system The U.S. system of money is a decimal system like the metric system. We do not use the (former) English system of money. Understanding how easy our system of money is will help you understand how easy the metric system is.

English currency used to be the following: pound sterling (20 shillings = 240 pence) crown (5 shillings = 60 pence) half crown (2 shillings and sixpence = 30pence = 1/8 pound) florin (2 shillings = 24 pence) shilling (12 pence) sixpence threepence penny halfpenny farthing (1/4 penny)

Compare that with U.S. decimal currency pound sterling (20 shillings = 240 pence) crown (5 shillings = 60 pence) half crown (2 shillings and sixpence = 30pence = 1/8 pound) florin (2 shillings = 24 pence) shilling (12 pence) sixpence threepence penny halfpenny farthing (1/4 penny) dollar (100 pennies) quarter (25 pennies) dime (10 pennies) nickel (5 pennies) penny

How many dimes are in a dollar? pound sterling (240 pence) crown (60 pence) half crown (30 pence) florin (24 pence) shilling (12 pence) sixpence threepence penny halfpenny farthing (1/4 penny) dollar (100 pennies) quarter (25 pennies) dime (10 pennies) nickel (5 pennies) penny

How many shillings are in a half crown? pound sterling (240 pence) crown (60 pence) half crown (30 pence) florin (24 pence) shilling (12 pence) sixpence threepence penny halfpenny farthing (1/4 penny) dollar (100 pennies) quarter (25 pennies) dime (10 pennies) nickel (5 pennies) penny

Now let's compare distances. metric system kilometer (1000 meters) meter decimeter (1/10 meter) centimeter (1/100 meter) millimeter (1/1000 meter) English (U.S.) system mile (5280 feet) yard (3 feet) foot (12 inches) inch quarter inch (1/4 inch) eighth of an inch (1/8 inch) sixeenth of an inch (1/16 inch) 32nd of an inch (1/32 inch)

The End … for Today

Now let's convert centimeters to kilometers, and inches to miles. metric system kilometer (1000 meters) meter decimeter (1/10 meter) centimeter (1/100 meter) millimeter (1/1000 meter) English (U.S.) system mile (5280 feet) yard (3 feet) foot (12 inches) inch quarter inch (1/4 inch) eighth of an inch (1/8 inch) sixeenth of an inch (1/16 inch) 32nd of an inch (1/32 inch)
