The Parthenon Ford Young

Location The Parthenon was built on the Acropolis, a hill in Athens, Greece. The construction started in 447 BC and ended in 432 BC. Most of the structure was still intact until 1687, when an explosion of gunpowder destroyed the roof and interior. The majority of the columns still stand, and some of the base, but it is being restored.

Purpose Two architects, Iktinost and Kallikrates, designed the Parthenon, and was built by the Athenians. It was built in order to replace two older temples for Athena, a Greek goddess. It was used for ceremonies and rituals to worship Athena.

Uniqueness What made the Parthenon unique was that most temples were decorative and had Ionic or Corinthian columns which were fancy, but were weaker, while the Parthenon was a temple with Doric columns, which were basic, but were the sturdiness and symbolized that the temple was strong. It took fifteen years to build. The Parthenon was constructed with marble.

Ancient Foresight You can see the style of Greek architecture used in the Parthenon in homes today. Many homes today contain Doric columns like the Parthenon. It is not one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World.
