Presentation transcript:

If Hell is Not Literal… Was God joking? God demonstrated harsh judgment on the wicked in the past. If the crime must fit the punishment, why did Christ suffer? If it’s wrong to take a man who lived in disobedience for 5 years and punish him eternally, then it’s wrong to reward eternal life to one who has lived righteously for 5 years.

If Hell is the Imagination of Men… Then God/Jesus imagined it! (Lk. 16:19-31) If Bible wrong about Hell, it might be wrong about Heaven! If Hell not literal then why did David wish to let “death seize them” (his enemies) when they go “alive down into Hell” (Sheol) because of their wickedness (Psa. 55:15)

If Hell is the annihilation of man at death… Why is Hell is described as a “second death” (Rev. 2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8)? Why the resurrection? “”…there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust. (Acts 24:15)

If Hell is the annihilation of man at death… Why is Hell is described as a “second death” (Rev. 2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8)? Why the resurrection? The annihilation of God? Why: "Hell from beneath is excited about you, To meet you at your coming; It stirs up the dead for you, All the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones All the kings of the nations. (Isaiah 14:9 )

If Hell is the annihilation of man at death… Why is Hell is described as a “second death” (Rev. 2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8)? Why the resurrection? The annihilation of God? Why (Isaiah 14:9)? Why didn’t Jesus teach annihilation (Lk. 16:19-31)? Why: “'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." (Matthew 22:32 )

16:19-31)? Why (Matthew 22:32)? Why: "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matthew 25:46 )

How Long Will Hell Last (1000 yrs.?) (“aionios”, ahee-o'-nee-os) which means “perpetual, eternal, forever, everlasting” "And these will go away into everlasting punishment (Gk. “aionios” - MDM), but the righteous into eternal life (Gk. “aionios” - MDM)." (Matthew 25:46) God is an “everlasting (Gk. “aionios” - MDM) God” (Rom. 16:26) The Spirit is an “Eternal (Gk. “aionios” - MDM) Spirit” (Heb. 9:14) Conclusion: Everlasting punishment will last as long as eternal life, the Eternal Father & the Eternal Spirit!

What is Hell Like? “Hell” translated from 4 words: “Sheol” (Heb.) and Gk. equivalent “Hades”, words simply meaning “the place of departed spirits” “Geenna” or the near equivalent “Valley of Hinnom” “Tartaroo” : the abode of the angels who sinned and fell.

Geenna/Hinnom Valley/Tophet

Hell: “Where” is it? Down The way of life winds upward for the wise, That he may turn away from hell below. (Proverbs 15:24 )

Hell: “Where” is it? Outside the City of God Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. (Revelation 22:14 )

Hell: “Where” is it? In a “Deep” Place (Place of Humiliation): "And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades. (Luke 10:15 ) The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. (Psalms 18:5 )

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Great Pain & Sorrow: “…There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Matthew 8:12) Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. (Revelation 16:10) Begging For Mercy: “…he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame…” (Luke 16:24-25)

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Fiery Torment: "and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:42) “…hell…the fire that shall never be quenched-…” (Mark 9:43-46) “…anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:13-15)

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Continual Smoke: "And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever…" (Revelation 14:11) From Brimstone? …the lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Revelation 19:20) Brimstone: is “A mineral substance, highly inflammable, and burning with a suffocating smell.” - American Tract Society Dictionary of the Holy Bible, 1859

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place Without Rest: “…torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night..." (Revelation 14:11)

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Darkness: “…will be cast out into outer darkness…" (Matthew 8:12) …foaming up their own shame…for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. (Jude 1:13)

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Rot & Decay: “…the corpses of the men Who have transgressed against Me. For their worm does not die, And their fire is not quenched. They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh." (Isaiah 66:24)

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Imprisonment: …the spirits in prison (1 Peter 3:19) “…the gates of Hades... (Matthew 16:18) "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death. (Revelation 1:18) ‘…between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.' (Luke 16:26) "Though they dig into hell, From there my hand shall take them; Though they climb up to heaven, From there I will bring them down; (Amos 9:2)

Hell: What Type of Place is it? A Place of Wretched Companionship: “…He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he who is filthy, let him be filthy still..." (Revelation 22:10- 11) They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds. (Revelation 16:11) "The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, "and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:41-42) The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God. (Psalms 9:17)

Varying Degrees of Punishment? Deuteronomy 32:22 “…the lowest Hell…” The “lowest depths of the pit” (Isa. 14:15) Greater condemnation for those that will not receive the message of the apostles than the condemnation of Sodom and Gomorrah (Mat. 10:15) (Mat. 23:14) Pharisees who would not accept Christ received a greater condemnation. Tartaroo seems to be reserved for the angels who sinned (Pet. 2:4)

Hell: God Is Aware of Inhabitants God Is Not Unaware of Its Inhabitants: “You (God - MDM) are there” (Psa. 139:8) Sheol is naked before Him, And Destruction has no covering. (Job 26:6 ) “…anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, "he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. (Revelation 14:9-10 )

Hell: Occupancy "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.” (Luke 13:24 ) “Hell and Destruction are never full…” (Proverbs 27:20 ) “Therefore Sheol has enlarged itself And opened its mouth beyond measure…And he who is jubilant, shall descend into it.” (Isaiah 5:14 )

Hell: Who Goes There? Occupants There on Account of Their Own Doing "Though they dig into hell, From there my hand shall take them; Though they climb up to heaven, From there I will bring them down; (Amos 9:2) …they were judged, each one according to his works... (Revelation 20:13-14)

Hell: Who Goes There? Those Not Found Written in the Book of Life: And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. (Revelation 20:15) Those “…who do not know God and who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Thess. 1:8-9)

Hell: Who Goes There? The Uncompassionate (Mat. 25:31-46) Fornicators (Prov. 5:5; 7:27; 9:18)

Hell: Who Goes There? (A Few Surprises!) “All Liars” (Rev. 21:8) “The Strong & Mighty” (Isa. 32:21)

Hell: How to Avoid It "Abraham said, “They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them…” (Luke 16:29-31) And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, (Hebrews 5:9 ) that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, (Philippians 1:10 ) Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, (1 Timothy 1:5)

What Must I Do To Go To Hell? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? (1 Peter 4:17) …the Lord Jesus …in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9)

FEAR HELL! "But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! (Luke 12:5)
