Official definition of Instrumentation from ISA (International Society of Automation)- A collection of Instruments and their application for the purpose of Observation, Measurement and Control. Instrumentation is the branch of engineering that deals with measurement. INSTRUMENTATION…

Traditional hardware instrumentation systems are made up of pre-defined hardware components, such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes that are completely specific to their stimulus, analysis, or measurement function. Because of their hard-coded function, these systems are more limited in their versatility than virtual instrumentation systems.

Virtual Instrumentation... Virtual instrumentation is the use of customizable software and modular measurement hardware to create user-defined measurement and control systems, called virtual instruments. Software is used to replace a large amount of hardware, in many cases complex and expensive.

The concept of a synthetic instrument is a subset of the virtual instrument concept. A synthetic instrument is a kind of virtual instrument that is purely software defined. The main advantage virtual instrumentation provides the user is that it utilises commercially available technologies, such as the PC and the ADC in place of traditional hardware. Software packages like National Instruments' LabVIEW and other graphical programming languages helped grow adoption by making it easier for non-programmers to develop systems. VI Contd...

What is LabVIEW? LabVIEW stands for “Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench”. Produced by NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS Graphical programming environment(G programming) Powerful and versatile analysis and instrumentation software system for measurement and automation.

LabVIEW Versions 1986: LabVIEW 1.0 (for Macintosh) 1990: LabVIEW : LabVIEW (for Sun & Windows) 1993: LabVIEW (Multiplatform) 1997: LabVIEW : LabVIEW : LabVIEW Real-Time 2000: LabVIEW 6i 2003: LabVIEW 7 Express 2005: LabVIEW : LabVIEW th Anniversary Edition

Advantages of LabVIEW Graphical user interface Drag and drop built-in functions Modular design Multiple high level development tools Multi platforms Reduces cost and preserves investment Flexibility and scalability Open environment Visualization capabilities Compiled language for fats execution Object oriented design Algorithm design

Major advantage LabVIEW offers up to 10X development speed compared to other text based programming languages. Also its built in functions for instrument control and data acquisition makes it a good choice for test and control applications.

Comparison 1.Syntax must be known 2.Non interactive 3.Test based 4.Program flow not visible 1.Not required 2.Highly interactive 3.Icon based 4.Data flow is visible.

 With NI LABVIEW you can... Program using intuitive graphical icons and wires that resemble a flowchart Zero coding, only drag and drop Develop test, control and design applications Acquire Measurements from Any Sensor, Any Bus and Measure in Minutes Hardware Integration: With any instrument or sensors. Thousands of instrument drivers Extensive Advanced Built-In Analysis and Signal Processing Hundreds of built-in libraries for advanced analysis and data visualization Scalable across multiple targets and OSs Customize your application with add-on modules and toolkits Easily use latest technologies like wireless, multicore processing & FPGAs Infinite Free Executables New version every year

LabVIEW Code..

Why LabVIEW?

Applications:

National Instruments is an American company, a producer of automated test equipment and virtual instrumentation software. Their software products include LabVIEW, a graphical development environment, Their hardware products include industrial automation, data acquisition, instrument control and machine vision.

NI had a dream to see every deserving Engineer LabVIEW enabled. That gave birth to “STEM Education”

The Planet NI Foundation is committed to enhancing education by collaborating with leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs to meet the changing needs of today's students and educators. through experiential learning.

VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTATION CLUB OF RVCE “ An initiative to bridge the gap between academia and industry”

The V.I. Club of RVCE has been started under the Planet NI from NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS MISSION OF VI CLUB: To bridge the gap between the industry & the academia and to understand the concept, principles and applications of virtual instrumentation and hence make the realization of new design & analysis of dynamic systems easier, better, cheaper and faster.
