PRESENTED BY: MS. PRIYA Energy For Life SOLAR ENERGY 1

What is Solar Energy? Solar power is energy from the sun and without its presence all life on earth would end. Solar energy is the energy of sunlight collected and used to provide electricity, to heat water, and to heat or cool homes, businesses or industry. 2

3 Solar energy Passive solar energy Active solar energy

Passive solar energy 4 Structures or buildings will be constructed in a way to capture the sun’s power through the use of windows or tanks. These systems will then heat homes or water, but can not be converted into actual electricity.

Active solar energy 5 Solar panels or solar cells will be used to capture the sun’s energy. The sun’s energy is then converted into direct or alternate current electricity which is then stored into batteries.

6

7 Solar energy is used today to power homes, buildings, appliances, gadgets, and many other items. It is commonly used across the world and is recognized as a leading renewable, clean, and cost effective source of energy.

8

Solar Energy 9 It is renewable! It is considered 'Renewable Energy' because... solar energy is technology used to convert the sun's power into electricity does not produce smoke (carbon dioxide and other air pollutants).

Solar cells 10 Solar cells are devices that convert light energy directly into electrical energy. You may have seen small solar cells on calculators or some mobile phones. Larger arrays of solar cells are used to power road signs, and even larger arrays are used to power satellites in orbit around Earth. Solar cells are also called photovoltaic cells or PV devices.

Photovoltaic (PV) OR solar cells 11 Photovoltaic (PV) OR solar cells directly convert sunlight into electricity. The simplest cells are used to operate wristwatches and calculators, and more complicated systems are used to light houses.

Photovoltaic (PV) solar cells 12 Today’s technology allows for the harnessing of solar energy through cells known as solar cells. These are also called photovoltaic cells. Photovoltaic cells are placed in direct sunlight and as the sun hits these cells, a chemical reaction takes place to produce electric currents. These currents are then converted into electricity that can be used to power everyday items or even households.

Solar Panels 13 solar photovoltaic (PV), capture the sun's energy using photovoltaic cells. The cells convert the sunlight into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. they can still generate some electricity on a cloudy day

Solar Cookers Solar cookers can cook just about any food that a conventional oven can. Heat from concentrated sunlight gets trapped in the box and can be used to heat food placed in the box. 14

ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR POWER 15 1.Solar energy is free although there is a cost in the building of ‘collectors’ and other equipment required to convert solar energy into electricity or hot water. 2. Solar energy does not cause pollution. 3. Solar energy can be used in remote areas where it is too expensive to extend the electricity power grid. 4. Many everyday items such as calculators and other low power consuming devices can be powered by solar energy effectively. 5. Solar energy is infinite (forever).

DISADVANTAGES OF SOLAR POWER 16 1.Solar energy can only be CAPTURED when it is daytime and sunny. 2. Solar collectors, panels and cells are expensive to manufacture although prices are falling rapidly. 3. Solar power stations can be built but they are very expensive. 4. In countries such as the UK, the unreliable climate means that solar energy is also unreliable as a source of energy. Cloudy skies reduce its effectiveness. 5. Large areas of land are required to capture the suns energy. Collectors are usually arranged together especially when electricity is to be produced and used in the same location.
