Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards Overview 2 State Legislation enacted in 2009 required TNDOE to develop parental involvement standards for public schools per Senate Bill No Per the legislation, school districts and public schools annually: Required to report compliance on these standards beginning with the school year Compliance results obtained from a survey sent to each school district in spring 2011 posted on the Tennessee Report Card Standards are based on the PTA’s National Standards for Family- School Partnerships Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards adopted by the State Board of Education in July of 2010 replaced the existing Parent/Family Involvement Policy from Update% pdf 0Update% pdf

Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards Standard 1: Welcoming All Families: Families are active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued, and connected to each other, to school staff, and to what students are learning and doing in class and school Standard 2: Communicating: Families and school staff engage in regular, meaningful communication about student learning Standard 3: Supporting Student Success Families and school staff continuously work together to support students’ learning and healthy development both at home and at school, and have regular opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and skills to do so effectively. 3

Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards Standard 4: Speaking Up for Every Child: Families are informed and enabled to be advocates for their own and other children, to ensure that students are treated fairly and have access to learning opportunities that will support their success. Standard 5: Sharing Power: Families and school staff are equal partners with equal representation in decisions that affect students and families and together inform, influence, and create policies, practices, and programs. Standard 6: Collaborating with Community: Families and school staff work together with community members to connect students, families, and staff to expanded learning opportunities, community services, and civic participation. 4

Tools & Resources Used To Implement The Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards TN Comprehensive System Planning Process (TCSPP)- district level TN School Improvement Planning Process (TSIPP)- school level Parent Involvement Plans- district and school level Parental involvement evidence used for Comprehensive Monitoring Instrument at LEA evidence for pages and/or Title I school evidence for pages PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships Assessment Guide for district and school level at Parent Surveys for district and school level 5

TN DOE Parental Involvement Standards Survey Survey completed by district and school staff. Survey does not go to parents or teachers. Suggested procedure: LEA Parent Involvement Coordinator distributes and collects completed school surveys and compiles all of the school survey results in their district onto one spreadsheet, completes district level compliance, and s the school-level and district-level compliance results (all at one time in one Excel workbook) to Diane Perhac at (Note that two worksheets will be submitted: one school-level worksheet for all of the schools in your district and one district-level The school principal or designee such as Parent Liaison or School Improvement Planning Team Leader will complete the school level survey. (The LEA Parent Involvement Coordinator will send the survey to each school in their district and collect the survey results from all schools in their district.) 6

TN DOE Parental Involvement Standards Survey, continued 7 Excel workbook contains 6 worksheets: instruction sheet for completing the survey, sheet containing the six TN parental involvement standards and associated web links, school-level sample sheet, district-level sample sheet, sheet containing the district-level data collection, and sheet containing the school-level data collection Survey collected through 2 Excel spreadsheets- Tab for district compliance and tab for school level compliance. Identifying the parental involvement tools and resources used will be collected at both the school and district levels: TCSPP, TSIPP, PI plans, Comprehensive Monitoring Instrument, PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships Assessment Guide, & parent surveys. At school level rubric used to obtain current level of practice for six TN parental involvement standards.

Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards Worksheet 14 Tennessee Parental Involvement Standards In a 2009 legislative session, Senate Bill No. 293 was enacted which required the Tennessee Department of Education to develop parental involvement standards in public schools. Each school district and school will be required to report compliance on these standards. The compliance for the standards will be on the Tennessee Report Card beginning with the school year. In the spring of 2011, a survey from the State Department will be sent to each school district to obtain the compliance information. The Tennessee Standards listed below are based on the PTA’s National Standards for Family-School Partnerships. These standards were adopted by the State Board of Education on July 30, Standard 1: Welcoming all families into the school community—Families are active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued, and connected to each other, to school staff, and to what students are learning and doing in class and school. Standard 2: Communicating effectively—Families and school staff engage in regular, meaningful communication about student learning.
