SALEM AND THE PURITANS Learned to read the Bible (very few children’s books) Extremely religious people, everything was connected to their religion

SALEM AND THE PURITANS Strict lives (chores, church, no play, no dancing- children too) Repress emotions (anger, love, excitement)

WITCHCRAFT AS A CRIME… Some ministers became witch hunters, based on a supposed bible verse that stated witches should be killed

WITCHCRAFT AS A CRIME… In Salem… 150+ accused of witchcraft 19 people executed Many more died in prison (lost records)

WITCHCRAFT AS A CRIME… Throughout history Approximately 200,000 people died for being “witches” Numbers were exaggerated to scare people…

WITCHCRAFT OFFENCES Contacting the devil Having a deal with the devil Having healing powers Reading Fortunes Sending their spirit into people

FAMILAR “Familiars were thought to be gifts from Satan or were inherited from other witches. Familiars would carry messages, go on errands, and assist in black magic rituals. Sometimes the witches would take on the form of their familiar so that they could travel about freely.” (Familiars in Witchcraft)

WHAT THE WITCHES REALLY DID… Cheating/Having an affair Being spiritual (including voodoo) Spending too much time outside Offending someone Misbehaving in public Nothing- some did nothing wrong

WHY WITCHCRAFT? If the doctor could find nothing wrong with someone who was acting strange- they believed it was witchcraft… There might be something really wrong with the person, or they could be acting…

WHY WITCHCRAFT? If it was thought that witchcraft was responsible for your issue, you were under pressure to give names…

WHY WITCHCRAFT? When “witches” would appear on the stand the accusers would have fits.

FITS: THE “EVIDENCE” Fall on the floor Twitch and scream Get pinched by spirits Pretend to see visions Ghosts, animal spirits Familiars

WRITING THE CRUCIBLE Written in the 1950’s Right after WWII ended Communists, Nazis, Witch Hunters- all used paranoia to scare people

WRITING THE CRUCIBLE AND RED SCARE Attempt to seek out communists or anyone with ties to them Scared people into falsely confessing

BLACKLISTING This kept these people from getting jobs Everyone avoids you, no one will help you… afraid of being blacklisted too…
