Presentation transcript:

These losses have a direct impact on the premiums you pay, not to mention the impact on injured employees, their families, and your business culture.

You may remember Federated’s previous Distracted Driving Initiative, ‘In the Blink of an Eye.’ It continues to be extremely popular with our clients and our association partners.

This program was a good start, but didn’t address one thing. Any Guesses? TEXTING!

Further claims analysis and customer feedback confirmed this growing epidemic…cell phones and their life-threatening impact on distracted driving.

Let’s begin with a couple of eye-opening facts in regards to distracted driving in general:  Cell phone use is the LEADING CAUSE of distracted driving.  Distracted driving accounted for over 421,000 accidents and 3,300 fatalities in  A driver’s ability to multi-task is a MYTH.

Let’s now consider facts about the use of cell phones and other mobile devices: As of December 2012, an average of SIX BILLION text messages were sent in the US each DAY.

Let’s now consider facts about the use of cell phones and other mobile devices: Sending an average size text, while driving, would require taking the eyes off the road for roughly five seconds. In a vehicle moving 55 MPH, the distance travelled in five seconds is the length of a football field.

Let’s now consider facts about the use of cell phones and other mobile devices: Drivers using cell phones have a SLOWER reaction time than drivers with a blood alcohol level of.08 (legally intoxicated).

Our new program titled, ‘What is Important to You?’ was created to raise awareness and specifically to address the alarming cultural and economic consequences of distracted driving.

‘What is Important to You?’ Will be introduced later this year and we will work with our clients and association partners to help our employees understand the dangers of driving while distracted.

We will be encouraging firms to: Step 1 – Adopt a policy. We will provide a sample Mobile Device Policy you may customize to your liking.

We will be encouraging firms to: Step 2 – Hold an employee safety meetings. We will provide a trainer outline, an employee handout, and an employee quiz. We want you to have the tools to educate your employees and verify their understanding of the risks of distracted driving

In the end, we want them thinking about their current driving habits and how they can improve. In one distracted moment, a tragedy could instantly impact the lives of so many.

We will be encouraging firms to: Step 3 – Leverage technology. If you TRULY want to stop distracted driving, there are several resources available for purchase that will disable a driver’s mobile device.

Our research found the Aegis Mobility products to be very reliable and a cost- effective method for managing a driver’s cell phone use while driving. We will share information about the products they can provide and instructions for how to contact them for more details.

Our intent is to help you deliver this important message in a way that will have meaningful impact not only for you and your employees, but also your families.

Specifically for petro: 1 out of every 7 tanker rollovers results in a fatality. We will be reintroducing tanker rollover prevention training in the 4 th quarter.

We can measure accidents that have happened but we can never measure those that didn’t. We owe it to ourselves, our employees, and their families to do everything we can to raise awareness and change habits.
