Institutional Effectiveness Process Institutional Assessment Outcomes Assessment

Purpose of Outcomes Assessment  To focus on the important goals and outcomes of the program/activity/service  To determine whether the program/activity/ service goals/outcomes are being accomplished  To use assessment results for improvement  To be accountable to stakeholders [e.g. students, employers, SUNY, accreditation agencies]

Benefits of Outcomes Assessment Outcomes Assessment data help to:  Validate the current program/activity/service  Identify plan of action to improve the program/activity/service  Identify budget needs for staff, equipment, training, etc.  Assist in long range planning  Build support for new initiatives

There are 7 Components There are 7 Components of an Effective Outcomes Assessment Process

Components of an Effective Outcomes Assessment Process Step 1: Determine Goals & Outcomes Goals - general statements of purpose for the program/activity/service provided There will be multiple goals for each program/activity/service There will be multiple goals for each program/activity/service

Step 1: Determine Goals & Outcomes con’t Outcomes - the specific results of the program/activity/service  Are stated in measurable terms  Detail the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that participants will display, for example: What do you want the participant to know? What do you want the participant to be able to do? What do you want the participant to care about? In general There will be multiple outcomes for each goal

Some Examples of Goals & Outcomes Program: Tractor Trailer Driver Training School Goal 1: To provide training for students to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License Outcomes: 1a Graduates of the program will be in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 49 CFR , which stipulates the minimum training requirements for entry-level driver designation. 1a Graduates of the program will be in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation 49 CFR , which stipulates the minimum training requirements for entry-level driver designation. 1b Graduates of the program will successfully pass the NYSCADLA road test and licensure as a Class A Commercial Operator, complete with the following endorsements: Haz Mat, Tank, Doubles & Triples and Metal Coil. 1b Graduates of the program will successfully pass the NYSCADLA road test and licensure as a Class A Commercial Operator, complete with the following endorsements: Haz Mat, Tank, Doubles & Triples and Metal Coil. Goal 2: To provide training for students so that they will pursue a career as a professional driver. Some Examples of Goals & Outcomes con’t Program: Contract Training Goal 1: To provide customized training programs as requested by organizations. Outcomes: 1a Curriculum content offered through program meets client needs. 1b Course schedule/structure meets client needs. 1c Classroom/training facilities meet client needs. (When program is offered on-campus or secondary site.)

Some Examples of Goals & Outcomes con’t Program: Dual Credit Goal 1: To deliver quality college course offerings at local high schools. Outcomes: 1a Participating students will complete course content consistent with MVCC courses. 1b Students who complete Dual Credit coursework are awarded transfer credit to MVCC and elsewhere. 1c Dual Credit students will demonstrate assessment results comparable to those of on-campus students.

Step 2: Link Goals to the College’s Mission and/or Competencies College Mission Statement Mohawk Valley Community College offers choice, opportunity and hope by providing accessible and affordable higher education, training and services that emphasize academic excellence, diversity and a global view. The College is committed to excellence in career and transfer preparation, business, economic and community development, and personal and cultural enrichment.

Link Goals to the College’s Mission and/or Competencies con’t College-wide Competencies: An MVCC graduate will be able to: 1) effectively communicate with others 2) organize information, evaluate alternatives, distinguish fact from opinion and reach logical conclusions 3) demonstrate the ability to interact effectively within a diverse society 4) demonstrate logical thinking and solve quantitative problems by using various computation and other mathematical techniques.

Step 5: Analyze Data  Interpret the Results  Compare the actual results to the expected results

Step 6: Report the Data Report results and analysis to the:  Executive Director of CCED  Vice President for Instruction  Director of Institutional Assessment  Other appropriate constituency groups

Step 7: Use Results for Improvement Decisions that can be made based on the assessment data:  No action --achievement reached or exceeded the expected result  Changes to the program/activity/service  Modification of assessment plan (outcomes, assessment methods and/or expected results)
