PRINTERS An external hardware responsible for taking computer data and generating a hard copy of that data. Printers are used to print text, images or photos.

TYPES OF PRINTERS: Dot Matrix Printers Inkjet Printer Laser Printer Thermal Printer LED Printer

PRINTERS FALL INTO TWO CATEGORIES:  Impact printers : It refers to a class of printers that work by banging a head or needle against an ink ribbon to make a mark on the paper. This includes dot-matrix printers, daisy- wheel printers, and line printers. Impact printers have one of the lowest printing costs per page.  Non-Impact printer: Any printer, such as a laser printer, ink-jet printer, LED page printer, that prints without striking the paper are non-impact printers. Non-impact printers are quieter than impact printers, and also faster due the lack of moving parts in the print head.

DOT MATRIX PRINTERS: Dot matrix printing or impact matrix printing is a type of computer printing which uses a print head that moves back-and-forth, or in an up-and-down motion, on the page and prints by impact, striking an ink- soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like the print mechanism on a typewrite.

PERFORMANCE OF DOT MATRIX PRINTERS Dot matrix printers, like any impact printer, can print on multi-part stationery or make carbon- copies. They have lowest printing costs per page. Lower-resolution dot matrix printers use nine pins. Higher-resolution models have 24 pins. Speed is measured in characters per second (cps). As the ink is running out, the printout gradually fades rather than suddenly stopping partway through a job.

INK JET PRINTERS Ink jet printers are an example of non-impact printers. The printer sprays tiny droplets of ink onto the paper. Ink jet printers are available for color and black-and-white printing.

PERFORMANCE OF INK JET PRINTERS A typical inkjet printer can produce copy with a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch ( dpi ). Some inkjet printers can make full color hard copies at 600 dpi or more.dpi In the inkjet printing mechanism, the print head has several tiny nozzles, also called jets. As the paper moves past the print head, the nozzles spray ink onto it, forming the characters and images. An inkjet printer can produce from 100 to several hundred pages, depending on the nature of the hard copy, before the ink cartridges must be replaced. Ink jet printers are inexpensive and have low operating costs.

LASER PRINTER Laser printers are non- impact printers. They use heat and pressure to bond particles of toner to paper. Laser printers are available for color and black-and- white printing.

PERFORMANCE OF LASER PRINTER Laser printers provide resolutions from 300 – 1200 dpi and higher. Black-and-white laser printers usually produce 4 – 16 ppm. Laser printers produce higher-quality print than ink jet printers, but are more expensive.

THERMAL PRINTER A thermal impact printer or electro thermal printer is a type of printer that uses heated pins to "burn" images onto heat-sensitive paper. These types of printers are commonly used in calculators and fax machines; and although they are inexpensive and print relatively fast, they produce low resolution print jobs.

PERFORMANCE OF THERMAL PRINTER A thermal printer, thermal transfer printer, or thermal wax-transfer printer is a high quality printer that commonly utilizes a thermal wax ribbon that melts a colored wax onto the paper creating near photo-realistic images. Thermal printers print more quietly and usually faster than impact dot matrix printers.dot matrix printers They are also smaller, lighter and consume less power, making them ideal for portable and retail applications.

LED PRINTER LED printers were developed by Casio and are printers capable of printing at the same or close to the same quality as most laser printers.

PERFORMANCE OF LED PRINTERS LED technology uses a light-emitting diode array as a light source in the pinhead instead of the laser used in laser printers and, more generally, in the xerography process. The LED bar pulse-flashes across the entire page width and creates the image on the print drum or belt as it moves past. LEDs are more efficient and reliable than conventional laser printers, since they have fewer moving parts, allowing for less mechanical wear.
