Roger Williams He believed church and state should be separate to avoid corruption. Banished for his beliefs.

Mary Rowlandson Her village was attacked by Indians at sunrise. She and several others were taken hostage and lived with the Indians for many months. She and one of her children were injured by the same bullet. 12 were killed and many more injured.

The Puritans Though they came here seeking religious tolerance, they were not very tolerant of others who did not believe as they did. They wanted to “purify” the Church of England. Believed only God can determine who will be saved. Believed unmarried men and women should not be alone together. Viewed the Indians as less than human.

Jonathan Edwards Very Famous preacher. Wrote thousands of sermons, but most famous is “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” Used his sermons to frighten his congregation into seeking salvation. Used lots of imagery in his sermons comparing God’s wrath to black clouds, glowing flames, great waters, a bow and arrow. Believed all were sinners and powerless before God.

Anne Bradstreet Wrote poems. Came from a wealthy family. One of her most famous poems is about her house burning after being struck by lightning. She believed that worldly possessions were not important and if God saw fit to take them away, then she would not complain, because her greater reward was in heaven.

John Winthrop First Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Thought Boston should be a utopia, “A city on a hill, a beacon of light”.

“Upon A Spider Catching a Fly” Symbols used in the poem: Web= A trap for all sinners Spider=The devil Wasp=Puritan sinner Fly=Non-believing sinner
