Puritans disagreed with the established Anglican church They wanted to purify it They thought it kept too many Catholic ceremonies They wanted congregations to have control over their own affairs Those who wanted to purify the church were known as Separatists

Charles I begins to persecute the Puritans They wanted a colonial refuge

5 Puritans arrive in N. America
Puritan Separatist emigrants called Pilgrims Founded Plymouth Colony Signed the Mayflower Compact Their idea of self-government would become one of the founding principles of the U.S.

6 Massachusetts Bay John Winthrop led another group of Puritans and founded Massachusetts Bay Colony Wanted to make “A City upon a Hill” An inspirational example for England

7 Puritans did not tolerate people who had different beliefs
Executed four Quakers and burned their books to keep them out of New England Purged their own people Roger Williams – said settlers did not have the right to take land from the Indians He fled to Rhode Island which became a haven for religious tolerance and they established separation of church and state Anne Hutchinson – banished for questioning religious leaders and holding bible study groups in her home Rhode Island Colony

8 Salem Witch Trials New England prosecuted suspected witches
Always suspicious when cattle or children became sick or died Salem tried, convicted, and executed 19 suspected witches along with 2 dogs

9 The Pequot War Pequot War Main Causes Rivalry over control of trade
Territorial expansion of Indian lands

10 The Pequot War Puritans accused Pequot of murdering an English trader
Allied with Pequot enemies and attacked villages Pequot retaliated and attacked Puritan villages In turn, the Puritans burned a Pequot village killing most of its inhabitants people Ended with the Treaty of Hartford Pequot nearly eliminated They lost all of their lands

11 Wampanoag chief, Metacom (King Philip), led attacks against Plymouth Colony
Began when Plymouth Colony arrested, tried, and executed 3 Wampanoag men for the murder of a Native. This undermined Metacom’s self-autonomy Acquired guns and destroyed 12 New England towns Colonist burn the Indian’s crops Wampanoag ended up losing most of their lands Others fled to Canada King Philip's War King Philip’s War
