Hymnic Service with Holy Communion Easter Day

Entrance Hymn

Opening sentences Christ has risen! Christ has risen indeed! Christ has risen from the dead. He has trampled down death by his death, and has brought light to those in the grave. And to us he has given eternal life. Thanks be to God.

In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let the heavens rejoice, and the earth be glad, and all creation, both seen and unseen, keep the feast. Thanks be to God. May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds. Thanks be to God.

Confession and Absolution Friends in Christ... through Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord God, our heavenly Father, I am a sinner and I have sinned against you, not only in my words and actions, but also in my secret thoughts and desires which I cannot fully know or understand, but which you know completely.

I am sorry that I have displeased you, and repent of the evil I have done. For the sake of your dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, have mercy on me, forgive my sins, and graciously help me in my weakness. Amen.

Psalm 118:1,2,14-24

Lord have mercy Risen Lord Jesus, hear our prayer and save us. Lord, have mercy. Risen Lord Jesus, hear our prayer and help us. Christ, have mercy. Risen Lord Jesus, hear our prayer and give us peace. Lord, have mercy.

Glory to God Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

♫ Hallelujah, hallelujah! Hearts to heaven and voices raise; sing to God a hymn of gladness, sing to God a hymn of praise; he who on the cross a victim for the world’s salvation bled, Jesus Christ, the king of glory, now has risen from the dead.

Hallelujah, hallelujah! Glory be to God on high; hallelujah to the Saviour who has gained the victory; hallelujah to the Spirit, fount of love and sanctity; hallelujah, hallelujah to the Triune Majesty!

Easter dialogue

Greeting The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Prayer of the day Let us pray (for a resurrection faith). Almighty God, you have overcome sin and death through the death of your Son, and have brought back innocence and eternal life through his resurrection. Help us confidently to believe this and always praise you with our whole heart. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

First reading After the reading: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Second reading After the reading: This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Hallelujah Response Since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has any power over him. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The life he lives, he lives to God. Hallelujah!

Gospel The gospel is announced. Glory to you, O Lord. After the reading: This is the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Gospel Response ♫ All Christians, come, rejoice and sing! Now is the triumph of our King; to all the world glad news we bring: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Your name we bless, O risen Lord, and sing today with one accord the life laid down, the life restored: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us* and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic† and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. * This means: us human beings † or: Christian; 'catholic' here means 'universal'

Sermon

Offering

Offering song ♫ Christ has risen, Christ the first-fruits of the holy harvest field, which will at his second coming all its full abundance yield; then the golden ears of harvest will their heads before him wave, opened by his glorious sunshine from the furrows of the grave.

Christ has risen, we have risen; shed on us your heavenly grace, rain and dew and gleams of glory from the brightness of your face; so that we on earth are fruitful till our final hour has come, then by angel-hands be gathered, safely to our harvest home.

Prayer of the Church Response: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Preface The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy, holy, holy ♫ Holy, holy, holy Lord, Alleluia! great and ever-present God. Alleluia! Earth joins heaven as we sing: Alleluia! Praise to our triumphant king. Alleluia!

In this place let us proclaim Alleluia! Christ who comes in God’s own name; Alleluia! join with angels as we sing: Alleluia! Glory to our holy king. Alleluia!

Words of Institution and Prayer All praise and thanks... comes to us in this holy meal. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

...Do this as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

... live as true members of the body of your Son. Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.

...until he comes as victorious Lord of all. Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Peace The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen.

Lamb of God ♫ Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, you take away our sin, you take the sin of all the world: have mercy, make us clean.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, you take away our sin, you take the sin of all the world: have mercy, make us clean.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, you take away our sin, you take the sin of all the world: grant us your peace. Amen.

Dismissal

Post-communion song ♫ He is risen, he is risen! Tell it with a joyful voice: he has burst his three days’ prison, let the whole wide world rejoice. Death is conquered, we are free, Christ has won the victory.

He is risen, he is risen! He has opened heaven’s gate; we are free from sin’s dark prison, risen to a holier state; soon a brighter Easter beam on our longing eyes will stream.

Post-communion prayer Let us pray. Heavenly Father, you gave your Son to die and raised him to give us eternal life. Grant that we who have received his body and blood may live in him and serve you as your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Blessing Christ has risen! He has risen indeed! The God of peace...look upon you with favour,† and give you peace. Amen.
