Classroom Module 2 Engineering Exam Guide pg. 10

Lesson Objectives  Inspect battery installation – ES01  Survey electrical cable installation – ES02  Examine steering gear – M101  Inspect portable fuel tanks M102  Determine propulsion operational tests – M103  Inspect electrical starting system – M104  Examine radio equipment – NS01

Inspect Battery Installation Battery

Battery Installations Cont. Battery configuration may not be optimal.

Means of Charging provided  Check overall condition of charging system  Dirty windings  Loose wires  Belt tension  Check voltage

Purpose of an electrical inspection  Minimize hazards  Inspector’s job is to survey & inspect the installation for signs of potential problems: fire, shock, or other hazards.  Ensure compliance  Cable properly supported  No hazardous conditions  Acceptable materials used  Circuit protection is used  Inspect regularly

Simple circuit

Series parallel circuit

Inspecting electrical systems cont.

Examine steering gear  Operational tests  Hydraulic leaks  Cable condition

Grease fitting maintenance

Inspect fuel system  Condition of fuel lines  Ensure no leaks

BASIC GASOLINE FUEL SYSTEM FUEL INTAKE FUEL TO ENGINE FUEL VAPOR Vent Examples (Note Screen) Vapors

Additional fuel system photos Fuel priming bulb Fuel hose protected from chafing

Witness propulsion engine tests  Low lube oil alarms  High coolant temp alarms  Forward/reverse  Hydraulic trim  Inspect prop for damage  Witness cooling water discharge

Nomenclature

Engine propulsion cont. Test operation of trim cylinder Ensure screens are clear

Inspect electrical starting systems  Electrical equipment in an enclosure that contains gasoline machinery.

Examine radio equipment  Examine installations  Ensure radio is fused  Complete radio check (if applicable)
