1 Standard Work Instruction: MHE Pre-Trip
Original Date: January 24, 2017 Version number: v1.0 Revision Date: MHE Pre-Trip This document will provide guidance on how to complete a pre-trip inspection for the most common Material Handling Equipment (MHE) in use in our facilities today. ORDER PICKER INSPECTION – Using MHE Inspection Checklist, verify the following items are in operational condition Open Hood (PPE Required) Inspect hoses for fluid leaks Inspect cables and hoses for signs of damage Verify battery water level is OK Ensure battery vent caps are in place Close hood Proceed around Lift Truck in counter-clockwise direction 6. Inspect Lift Chains for damage 7. Verify that Battery Retainers on both sides of the truck are properly installed 8. Verify that both forks are secure and free of bends, cracks and excessive wear 9. See that all wheels are in good condition Enter Operator Compartment 10. Inspect your harness, tether, snap hooks and mounting points for signs of damage or excessive wear Put on safety harness and fasten tether. 11. Verify the Safety Shield/Cage is clean and clear of obstructions Turn Power to Test Position 12. Verify that alarm and all display lights are working 13. Test Horn 14. Verify lights/fans are operational (where applicable) 15. Verify that Flashing light on hood is operational 16. Verify that power disconnect works Turn Power to On Position 17. Test hydraulic functions by raising and lowering the unit 18. Check steering for smooth easy operation 19. Drive truck slowly in both forward and reverse 20. Drive truck thru full speed range in forward and reverse 21 .Check braking and plugging distances in forward and reverse 22. Test pallet clamp for proper operation Note any defects on MHE Board and inspection checklist; if equipment is unsafe to operate follow lock-out/tag-out procedure.

SIT-DOWN FORKLIFT INSPECTION – Using MHE Inspection Checklist, verify the following items are in operational condition Open Engine Compartment Check Engine Oil level Inspect hoses for fluid leaks Check belts for tears and/or excessive wear Inspect Transmission Fluid level Close Engine Compartment Proceed around Forklift in counter-clockwise direction 6. Ensure engine compartment is properly secured 7. Check propane tank (PPE required) Verify tank level (replace as needed) Check hose connections Inspect for leaks 8. See that all wheels/tires are in good condition 9. Verify that both forks are secure and free of bends, cracks and excessive wear 10. Check hydraulic hoses for fluid leaks 11. Inspect Lift Chains for Damage Enter Operator Compartment 12. Inspect Seatbelt for tears/damage 13. Secure Seatbelt Turn Ignition to Accessory 14. Verify that alarm and all display lights are working 15. Test Horn 16. Verify lights/fans are operational (where applicable) Turn Ignition to On 17. Verify parking brake is operational 18. Test hydraulic functions 19. Test fork attachment for proper functionality (where applicable) 20. Disengage parking brake 21. Check steering for smooth easy operation 22. Drive forklift slowly in both forward and reverse 23. Drive truck thru full speed range in forward and reverse 24. Check braking distances in forward and reverse Note any defects on MHE Board and inspection checklist; if equipment is unsafe to operate follow lock-out/tag-out procedure.
