Ford Site Open Space Work Group Meeting #4: November 15, 2010

Preferred Open Space Features 10% of Ford site (15 acres) 25% of Ford site (39 acres) 45% of Ford site (70 acres) These composites depict the features selected from a broad menu of open space elements in a group exercise conducted by the Ford Site Open Space Work Group on November 1, The group chose favored facilities to fill boards representing 10%, 25%, and 45% of the land area of the full site. Does this accurately reflect 11/1 group selections and discussion? Are there different choices you would make now? C: $180,000/acre O: $11,000/acre C: $160,000/acre O: $8,000/acreC: $120,000/acre O: $7,000/acre

Strategies will be added as the project progresses.

Givens More open space is preferred to less. League-play ball fields should continue to be part of Ford site uses. If higher levels of open space at the site can be attained, natural habitat at the edge of the bluff top should be expanded. These “givens” about open space at the Ford site have been expressed by the community.

Framing Guidelines Open space features should have layered functions (example: athletic fields should infiltrate or reuse stormwater). Open space feature selections should respond to land use type and densities at the Ford site. Open space at the Ford site should accommodate both new development and the surrounding neighborhood. Most active open space should be integral to new development at the Ford site as opposed to peripheral. Selected open space features should respect the performance criteria outlined in these guidelines. These are foundational guidelines that express community interests for open space at the Ford site. Are there other key points that should be reflected?

Categories of Open Space Features Community center (building) Gathering/picnic grounds Trails Nature areas Baseball/softball fields Soccer/lacrosse/football fields Ice skating Court sports (tennis, b-ball, v-ball) Playgrounds Community gardens Dog parks Adventure play Performance criteria will be written for each of these categories.

Performance Criteria Targeted users/user-shed Distribution across the site Size/scale Key design features Support facility needs Adjacency/proximity –Synergies with land uses and other features –Conflicts with land uses and other features Layered function –What functions are possible (athletics, play, stormwater, gathering, habitat) –How they can be incorporated Performance criteria for the following subjects will be written and diagrammed for each category of open space feature.
