Security and Shelter This function focuses on ensuring that the environment for the children is safe and has a softness to it that gives it a more homey feeling. The photos include “retreat areas” that students can go to when doing independent reading.

Social Contact This function takes a look at how student interaction will take place based on the desk arrangement. The top picture is usually a place where a group of students meet with the specialist. The bottom picture shows that desks are arranged in small groups. Students can interact or work independently, and there is space for the teacher to walk around and interact.

Symbolic Identification This function highlights who is in the classroom. It depicts the students and teacher through the items that are displayed. The top picture is the word wall, there for the benefit of the students. The bottom picture has students’ birthday on the right (the left side has class jobs and the middle is stations, both of which I will discuss later).

Task Instrumentality This function is centered around how tasks get carried out in the classroom. The top photo is of supplies that are available for students (including manipulatives and scissors). The bottom left picture has class roles (left) and stations (middle) that guide students to get tasks done. The bottom right picture is the class schedule, mapping out the daily tasks.

Pleasure This function emphasizes having an attractive and pleasing classroom setting. The top picture illustrates this since the lighting adds attractiveness. The bottom picture shows curtains on the window along with a small scarecrow and a wooden sign that says “Autumn,” a pleasing decoration.

Growth This final function focuses on the children in promoting their development. The picture that I’ve included is of the classroom library that the teacher has, with books of different genres that allows students to explore more about topics while developing and growing as learners.
