Year 8 Peer Assessment Level 4 – You have written a story but it does not match the “Good Samaritan” parable very well. Level 5 – You have written a story that clearly matches the “Good Samaritan” parable with good spelling, grammar and punctuation. Level 6 – As well as the above you have thought about the symbolism of each of the characters in the story and tried to use modern characters to match this. Level 7 – As well as the above you have considered the entire symbolism of the parable including the setting and the story teller i.e. Jesus. Spelling, punctuation and grammar is perfect!

St Paul's View There is no longer Jew or Gentile, Slave or free. For you are all Christians – you are one in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:28)

Task Using St Paul's quotation as your starting point, make a flow diagram of the following church views. Include links where appropriate.

Different Christian Views The Anglican Church The Anglican Church defines racism as 'The theory, prejudice and practice of disadvantaging someone solely on the grounds of their colour, culture and ethnic origin.' George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury 1999 – 2003 said: 'Racism has no part in the Christian Gospel. It contradicts our Lord’s command to love our neighbours as ourselves. It offends the fundamental Christian belief that every person is made in the image of God and is equally precious. It solves no problems and creates nothing but fear and hatred.'

Different Christian Views The Roman Catholic Church The Roman Catholic Church, in the Second Vatican Council, sent out this statement. 'Discrimination on grounds of sex, race, colour, social conditions, language or religion is incompatible with God’s design.'

Different Christian Views The United Reformed Church The United Reformed Church issued its 'Declaration on Racism' in It stated: 'There is a cause for celebration in Church and Society when black and white people learn to co-operate, share power and make decisions together and where new forms of community life are thus discovered.'

Different Christian Views The Methodist Church The Methodist Conference 1987 issued the following statement: 'We affirm that racism is a direct contradiction of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.'

Churches Together In May 1998 the different denominations united and issued the following, as one voice, from 'The Churches Together'. This is an ecumenical movement. 'Respect for the humanity we share with each and every neighbour is the only one basis for a peaceful and good society. Any attack on the dignity and human rights of any racial or religious group damages all of us.' However, the Church has not always been innocent of prejudiced attitudes.
