Thalassemia Center Organization Core Competencies

Mastering Fire Safety skills and area specific information

You should be able to: IDENTIFY 3 common classes of fires SELECT the proper type of extinguisher EVALUATE when it is safe to fight an “early-stage” fire, and; APPLY P.A.S.S. to operate a portable extinguisher.

COMMON FIRE CLASSIFICATIONS “Ordinary” combustibles P aper, wood, rubber, plastics and textiles. “Flammable liquids” Oil, gasoline, solvents “Energized circuits” Electrical equipment and computers

COMMON TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: WATER DRY CHEMICALDRY CHEMICAL CO2CO2

Fire Response Priorities RACE: R=Rescue A=Alarm C=Confine E=Extinguish+/or evacuate

Use a portable extinguisher ONLY if the: Building is being evacuated ( Fire alarm has been pulled ) Fire Department has been called ( Dial !) Fire is NOT spreading (small and contained) EXIT IS CLEAR (fight fire with your back to an exit ) Proper extinguisher is at hand, and... You have been trained and know how to use it!

Have someone back you up! Get assistance BEFORE trying to fight a fire!

Remember the PASS word: 1) Keep your back to a clear escape route, 2) Stand back 6 to 8 feet from the fire, 3) Then >>: P.A.S.S. P ULL A IM S QUEEZE S WEEP

OK, It’s out… Now What? WATCH the fire area If the fire flares up again repeat! If you can’t control the fire, LEAVE immediately! Call the fire department to inspect the scene! Recharge or replace any used fire extinguisher!

Are you aware of the location of fire exists? Are you aware of the Fire emergency extension to dial ? Are you aware of the location of fire fighting equipments? ( Extinguisher, Blanket, Hose Real) Are you aware of the specific use of each color of fire Extinguisher at the center? Mastering Fire Safety skills and area specific information

Do you know the assigned fire warden and deputy fire warden, searcher, and informer in the day care area Do you know the assigned fire warden and deputy fire warden, searcher, and informer in the ward Are you aware of the location of fire alarm control panel of evacuation

Aware of what RACE stands for. Aware of what PASS stands for. Aware of the emergency action color codes.

Are you aware of the stages of evacuation applicable to the center? Do you know how to to operate a fire extinguisher fast and effectively?

For fire warden,deputy fire warden,sweeper and informer  Demonstrate your role effectively incase of fire

Evaluation score ≥ 80% is competent Evaluation score < 80% is deficient

There are four separate exit routes Fire emergency extension.**22 Extinguishers locations…………find out!! Administration: Fire Warden :Thalassemia center Outreach Coordinator Deputy Fire Warden : Quality Officer Escort: Clinic Nurse (1 for 4 patients ) Searcher/Sweeper: 2 security informer: Reception Clerk Ward Fire Warden : charge nurse Deputy Fire Warden : Shift in-charge Escort : Assigned nurse 1 for 4 patients Searcher/Sweeper: 2 security informer :Morning shift (General assignment nurse) / after noon shift assigned staff nurse ) Fire alarm control panel located at nursing station Stages of evacuation applicable to the center Stage I/ Zone: Evacuation from the affected area to corridors Stage II/ Horizontal: Evacuation form the affected area to a safe compartment.from the ward to administration and vice versa Stage III/ Floor: Not applicable Stage IV/ External Building Evacuation: Evacuation from the main corridor of the center (i.e. after stage I evacuation), to the Fire Assembly point No 8.
