2 Purpose To provide chapters with information on how to operate efficiently and in a manner that is in alignment with the mission of the Society and a resource in carrying out the National and Regional Directives. To ensure that all chapters, whether operationally weak or strong, are equipped with the tools to improve their chapters’ current standing and how to make it more beneficial to the membership and to ensure that they are truly impacting their communities in a positive manner. 18 Leadership Development Objective: To provide a solid foundation for leading the chapter to move in the direction to conduct and facilitate the business of NSBE. The chapter leader defines the experience of our members. National Society of Black Engineers

19 Leadership: Core Values Provide your members a Distinct Advantage over other engineering students on your campus Servant leadership Lead by example: Do your best to fulfill the mission Represent the membership Be the voice of NSBE on your campus Have a strong presence: In front of the NSBE membership At the Regional and National level Set the Chapter Vision and plans to achieve it Ensure your NSBE chapter is built to last As a leader you should have a good feel for who could come after you and who could follow that person Make sure the chapter is financially vital for at least 2 years after your tenure National Society of Black Engineers

20 Leaders: Commit to your office Officer Duties and Contract Duties include: Each elected officer, zone leader, and appointed officers responsibility Breaks down each zone and who is in it specific to your chapter Contract includes: NSBE logo and name Chapter name-Chapter Executive Board Contract Officers name Officers expectations/guidelines What to do if guidelines cannot be fulfilled Consequences for not complying with printed guidelines (3 strikes) Printed Name Officer signature, president signature, chapter advisor signature Controlled by the chapter president and chapter advisor National Society of Black Engineers

21 Effective Communication Objective: To ensure that information is disseminated to the correct audience in an efficient, effective, and timely manner. Begin with: A written and updated chapter constitution Updated at least every two years Know and use parliamentary procedure See Robert’s Rules of Order National Society of Black Engineers

22 Effective Communication Continue with: An Effective Meeting Checklist (CEB or General Body): All CEB members present Meetings held at regularly scheduled time Start on time (CEB members should be early) All members are present Meetings are guided by prepared agenda approved and distributed prior to meeting All General Body meetings being with standing and stating the NSBE mission Meeting minutes are recorded and distributed CEB has system to convey information to non-CEB members as needed Leader or facilitator is designated for each meeting CEB accomplished tasks on agenda Meeting concludes with summary and ends on time CEB feels open to express comments or concerns Board works together to explore solutions and collaborates on problem solving process National Society of Black Engineers

23 Financial Vitality Objective: To ensure sufficient financial resources to assist in the implementation of chapter recruiting and programmatic efforts and to plan for long term financial stability. Budgets and Corporate Solicitation Packets (CSP) National Society of Black Engineers

26 Effective Program Implementation Objective: To implement National/Regional Programs correctly and ensure the effectiveness to the Chapter membership 1. Become Knowledgeable- Know the programs offered 2. Register on NOL unless told otherwise 3. Participate 4. Develop as a Member or Chapter! National Society of Black Engineers

27 Effective Program Implementation 5 Steps to a TORCH Community Service Plan 1. Adopt TORCH as the community service activity for the year in your chapter. 2. Select a person to the be the TORCH coordinator for your Chapter. 3. Locate and Secure a Community Tech Center (CTC) near you! 4. Establish a relationship with the CTC site. (See TORCH Volunteer Expectations on TORCH Website) 5. Get started! Make sure to record your hours every month ON LINE! National Society of Black Engineers

Basic History: Founded at Purdue University in 1975 Chicago Six (John Logan, Edward Coleman, George Smith, Stan Kirtley, Brian Harris, Anthony Harris) NSBE acronyms, 7 key business areas, and memberships The NSBE Torch and Lighting Bolts Torch: Symbolizes our everlasting, burning desire to achieve success in the competitive society and to affect a positive change on the quality of life for all people. Lighting bolts: Represent the striking impact that will be felt by the society and the industry due to the contributions and accomplishments made by dedicated members of NSBE. You do have an impact in your chapter, school, community and NSBE!
