What is the Satellite Applications Catapult? The Satellite Applications Catapult is one of a network of centres established by the Technology Strategy Board to accelerate the take up of emerging technologies and drive economic growth. It helps organisations make use of and benefit from satellite technologies, and brings together multi-disciplinary teams to generate ideas and solutions in an open innovation environment. A not for profit company, the Catapult provides access to: Facilities, Platforms and Expert knowledge To enable the translation of ideas from concept to market. 2

Background and Mission Failure to Commercialise Failure to Exploit £40bn Market by %pa Growth Major growth in satellite applications but significant barriers for new businesses Basic Research/Ideas Universities, Individuals, SMEs Orbital & Ground Infrastructure Sustained Services & Market Application Failure to Exploit The Catapult: Addresses issues at these points that traditionally lead to failure

Overview

CEMS – Climate & Environmental Monitoring from Space The monitoring of climate and environmental change from space is a very challenging task, requiring huge volumes of data to be processed, quality- controlled, managed and analysed. Although the expertise and capacity to exploit that knowledge for commercial and scientific benefit exists in the UK, there is a need to create a scalable national infrastructure to realise the economic growth potential. This has led to the development of the Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space (CEMS) facility, purposely built to offer space-based Climate Change and Earth Observation (EO) data and services. Its goal is to nurture growth in EO and climate-based services. This will be done by providing, in a cloud computing environment, high performance computing, extensive data collections, various user services and software applications, and visualization capability. The CEMS facility is now operated by the Satellite Applications Catapult and a number of demonstrator applications have been created.

Why is CEMS Unique? It will make the data from satellites, ground and airborne sources accessible in native and common formats. It will provide tools and information to ensure the integrity of the data – science and commercial users will be able to rely on the information. It will provide a scalable model by hosting services and applications close to very large quantities of satellite data and high performance computing facilities.

Data and Digital Services The Satellite Applications Catapult is not a data supplier, but can facilitate access to commercial and non commercial data. The Catapult has relationships with major data suppliers and can help broker deals for data such as high and medium resolution optical data and Synthetic Aperture Radar. Earth Observation Data How does acquisition work? Earth Observation satellites do not continuously acquire data. Limitations on acquisition are battery life of satellite, data storage and downlink capability. Depending on the orbit satellites maybe sun synchronous and if within a constellation may follow each other. Tasking priorities may prevent data from being collected from a desired area for some time. What types of data are there? Passive: Photography Radiometers Infrared Active Sensors: RADAR LIDAR
