Do you try to find the meaning of songs you hear or do you just sing along?

See if you can use clues from the lyrics to infer what the following songs are about.

“In the Name of Love” U2

Evidence (look at words for clues) Schema (experience and knowledge) Inference

“Early morning, April 4th”

“shots ring out in the Memphis sky”

“Free at last, they took your life”

Bono is speaking about those throughout history who have died because they preached of the equality of all men and practiced non-violence as the only way to achieve their goal. They lived their life with an inner “Pride” with the message of love for all of mankind.

“How to Save a Life” The Fray

What do you think the song was about??

Evidence (look at words for clues) Schema (experience and knowledge) Inference

“How To Save A Life,” was inspired by Slade’s experience as a mentor to a drug- addicted teen. “I was a sheltered suburban kid when I met this guy. He was a recovering addict, coming out of a really tough teenage life. Thankfully, he was on his way out of that life, so he was able to really look back with some objectivity. The song is more of a memoir about his slow motion descent and all the relationships he lost along the way.”

Finally, some brainteasers…

You will be given strange- sounding situations with perfectly good explanations. It’s your job to use inferencing skills to figure out what it is.

The clues can provide hints if you get stumped.

Good luck!

A lady walked up to a man behind a counter and handed him a book. He looked at the book and said “that will be six dollars.” She paid the man and then walked out without the book. He saw her leave without the book, but did not call her back. Why? 1) He was not surprised that she left the book 2) She was not buying the book 3) It was not a bookstore Clue 1 Clue 2 Clue 3

The woman was returning an overdue book to the library.

Five pieces of coal, a carrot, and a scarf are lying on the ground. Nobody put the items on the ground, but there is a perfectly logical reason for the items being there. What is it? 1) The time of year is an important factor. 2) The items were left by a person. 3) The items were used for entertainment. Clue 1 Clue 2 Clue 3

The items were used when building a snowman, but fell to the ground when the snow melted.

One stormy night Jack and Jill were found dead on an apartment floor, surrounded by glass and water. Neither had any wounds and they had not been poisoned. All the windows were closed and locked. Not a person was in the apartment when they died How did they die? 1) Their death was an accident. Clue 1 2) Their death was not caused by a human. 3) The weather did not play a role in their death. Clue 2 Clue 3

Jack and Jill were goldfish whose fishbowl was knocked over by a dog, causing them to suffocate.

While digging in the ground a woman discovered a large box filled money and jewelry. For seven years she didn’t spend any of the money or tell anyone about her discovery. Then she suddenly bought a new house, a new car, and wardrobe. How come? 1) The woman was not trying to avoid being questioned about her discovery. Clue 1 2) She would have liked to have spent the money sooner. 3) She was not in prison. 4) She was physically prevented from spending the money. Clue 2 Clue 3 Clue 4

The woman had been shipwrecked. She found a pirate’s treasure, but wasn’t rescued for 7 years.
