How Do I Get There? n Many programs are set up as 2+2 with basic courses at the community college and specialized courses at the Program School or University. n May require entrance exam (e.g. AHPAT, Nursing entrance exams etc.) n Required Courses for Allied health fields are generally different than those for Professional schools (see your advisor)

Allied Health Trends n HMO organizations are relying heavily on Physician Assistants. n Aging “baby boomers” will require Occupational and Physical Therapists, in-home Nursing care, and various geriatric specialists. n Many Programs are now Master’s level (e.g. Phys. Assist, and Phys Therapist)

Trends in Graduate Careers n Current job situation is mixed; there are limited opportunities in research fields, technical and science teaching areas showing increased demand. n Corporations consistently seek scientists to do research and development. n Government agencies often seek scientists for basic and applied research, regulatory agencies, and other technical positions.

How to Prepare for Your Career n Fully explore your options. n Decide what you really want to do. n Be realistic about your goals. n Learn as much as possible about the particular field you are interested in. n Develop a “Master Plan”.

How Will I Pay? n Student loans. n Scholarships and grants (available through federal or state, agencies (e.g. NIH, NSF, AMP) or private and civic organizations. n Do your “homework” well in advance to find money!!! n Do your “homework” well in advance to find money!!!

“Hitting the wall” n Self-advising - wrong prerequisites taken. n Taking admissions tests without adequate preparation. n Non-competitive G.P.A (especially in science core courses). n Habitual Course Drops. n Not completing course work on schedule. n Applying late in the admissions process.
