Introducing the new SWITRS GIS Map application in TIMS Safe Transportation Research and Education Center University of California, Berkeley John Bigham Sang Hyouk Oum

Introduction to TIMS Architecture of TIMS/SWITRS GIS Map Needs to be addressed Demo of new SWITRS GIS Map – User interface – New functionality – Browser compatibility – Improved workflows Other planned features Overview 2

Provides data and mapping analysis tools and information for traffic safety related research, policy and planning. Released April 2011 Free account application, open to everyone Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) 3

Maintained by California Highway Patrol Approximately 170,000 injury collisions each year – Collisions, parties, victims To make available through TIMS: Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) 4 Download from CHP I-SWITRS site Format and Georeference (Add Lat/Long coordinates) Upload to TIMS database servers

Architecture of TIMS 5

Map-centric collision viewing with other data layers (Census Tracts, TAZ, Schools, ZIP, etc.) Collision querying tool Focused collision spatial selection tools – Drawing – Buffer (intersection or corridor) – Region (TAZ, census tract, zip code) User selected collision statistics and download SWITRS GIS Map 6
