The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:1 – Rejoice in Jesus. This is safe for you. 3:2-3 – The true believer confides only in Jesus. 3:4-11 – Paul demonstrates this perspective. 3:4-6 – Paul’s confidence in the flesh 3:4 – Paul had confidence in himself. 3:5-6 – Paul had a basis for self-confidence. 3:7-11 – Paul’s confidence in Jesus 3:7 – Paul rejected that to trust in Jesus. 3:8-11 – Knowing Jesus by trusting Him.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:1 – Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord Finally – this looks back to 1: It is the final point coming out of this passage. My brethren – the Philippian believers Rejoice in the Lord Rejoice – Be glad that you are saved by Jesus’ righteousness. In the Lord – rejoice because of what Jesus has done for you

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:1 – For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe. On the one hand To write the same things to you – to trust in Jesus. For me is not tedious – Paul did not mind this. But, on the other hand For you it is safe – This reminded was needed because the message is so important.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:2-3 – The true believer confides only in Jesus. Paul explains here why his warning is safe for them. Beware of dogs – Those who were unclean, not fitting to enter God’s presence. Beware of evil workers – Those who did evil, like resisting Jesus’ Gospel. Beware of the mutilation – Those who thought to earn God’s approval by obeying the law.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:2-3 – The true believer confides only in Jesus. For we are the circumcision. Reason – Beware of the others because they are not truly God’s people. We are the circumcision – We are the true people of God. Who – There follow three clauses that identify who are the circumcision.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:2-3 – The true believer confides only in Jesus. For we are the circumcision. Who worship God in the Spirit – acceptable worship, unlike what “dogs” give. Who rejoice in Christ Jesus – grateful for Christ’s sacrifice, instead of opposing it. Who have no confidence in the flesh – in the law

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:4-11 – Paul’s example of confidence in Jesus. 3:4 Though I also might have confidence in the flesh. Surprising point – One does not expect Paul to argue this point. It is important for his point in vss I also might have confidence in the flesh – Paul had the basis for confidence in his own personal righteousness, in man’s eyes.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:4-11 – Paul’s example of confidence in Jesus. 3:4-6 – Paul’s basis for confidence in the flesh. 3:4 – If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh Many would have confidence in the flesh Confidence in the flesh – trusting in personal obedience to please God. 3:4 – I more so: - Paul had an even better basis for self confidence before God.

Circumcised the eighth day – The proper day Of the stock of Israel – the right people Of the tribe of Benjamin – one of two tribes faithful to the line of David A Hebrew of the Hebrews – a summation of the evidence to this point. On the basis of race, Paul was solid gold.

Concerning the law, a Pharisee – with respect to the law, keeping it strictly Concerning zeal, persecuting the church – with respect to zeal, even to attacking others Concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless – with respect to doing right by obeying the law, blameless in man’s eyes.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:4-11 – Paul’s example of confidence in Jesus. 3:7-11 – Paul’s choice of confidence in Christ. 3:7 – But these I have counted loss for Christ But – Paul introduces this section, rejecting the surprising point of vss 4-6. These – Paul identifies which things clearly. I have counted loss – considered useless. For Christ – for the sake of Christ’s righteousness.

3:7 – But what things were gain to me, these What things – looking at what Paul listed in vss 4-6. Were gain to me – from the perspective of earning righteousness before God by obeying the law. These – What Paul has just identified.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 3:4-11 – Paul’s example of confidence in Jesus – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss Yet – Paul again states this is opposite from vss 4-6. Indeed – contrary to vss 4-6. All things – This is more intensive that vs 7. All else fades compared to knowing Christ I count loss – the same as vs 7.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord For – I count that loss in order to know Christ. The excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus – the great privilege to know Jesus as one’s Saviour My Lord – Jesus was Paul’s Lord.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss of all things – Paul chose Christ over all aspects of his life. For whom – A reason why Paul lost everything. He could not both trust in Christ and also in his own righteousness

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss And count them as rubbish And – for whom I (suffered and) counted Count them as rubbish – this is a very strong evaluation, like “totally worthless”, compared to Jesus’ righteousness.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I count them as rubbish That I may gain Christ In order that I gain Christ – a goal. Gain Christ – gain His righteousness. And [that I may] be found in Him Same goal stated differently.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I count them as rubbish That I may be found in Him Not having my own righteousness Not – negative example before the positive one at the end of vs 9. Having – “not by means of my own”

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I count them as rubbish That I may be found in Him Not having my own righteousness Which is from the law – not earning righteousness by personal actions of keeping the law, like circumcision.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I count them as rubbish That I may be found in Him Not having, but [having] that which is through faith in Christ By means of having the righteousness Through faith – by means of trusting

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I count them as rubbish That I may be found in Him Not having, but [having] that which The righteousness which is from God by faith – the righteousness God causes in us based on (because of) our faith.

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord That I may know Him Restating the goal to know Christ Know Him – to have Jesus’ righteousness And the power of His resurrection And [that I may know] – second goal Power = resurrection = be sinless finally

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord That I may know Him, and the power, And the fellowship of His sufferings, And [that I may know] third goal. The fellowship = sufferings = personal pain Being conformed to His death – by means of suffering like He did for God’s will

The Epistle to the Philippians Let Your Conduct be Worthy of Christ 3:1-11 – Rejoice that you have Jesus’ righteousness 8-11 – Knowing Christ is most important. Yet indeed I count all things loss For the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord That I may know His sufferings Being conformed to His death If, by any means, I may attain the resurrection from the dead A certain condition “if, and I will” Resurrection – when I become sinless
