Face book has recently given people the option to allow anyone in the world to Search for Face book Members. This setting is OFF by default. DO NOT turn it on, doing so will expose your name and some personal details to the world's search engines like Google Search and Microsoft Bing.

Face book pledges to investigate a complaint and to remove the content and warn or ban the offender from the site within 24 hours. If you Face book you should get a reply within 72 hours telling you what they have done about the problem.

Information to keep yourself safe using the internet

Never give out your real name Never tell anyone where you go to school Never give out your address or telephone number Tell an adult if someone makes inappropriate suggestions to you or makes you feel uncomfortable online Only meet someone from a chat room in a public place with one of your parents or another adult.

Danger Signs If a person tries to insist on having your address or phone number If a person s you pictures which make you feel uncomfortable and which you would not want to show to anyone else If a person wants to keep their chats with you secret If a person tells you that you will get into trouble if you tell an adult what has been going on If a person wants you to them pictures of yourself or use a webcam in a way which makes you feel uncomfortable If a person shares information with you and tells you not to tell anyone else about it If a person wants to meet you and tells you not to let anyone know

Open lines of communication Set clear family internet rules that are age appropriate Use family safety tools – windows live family safety, windows 7 parental controls or windows vista parental controls Protect from offensive pop-ups by using the pop-up blocker built into Internet Explorer Don’t share personal information such as real name, address, phone number, passwords Tell if something happens online to make a person feel uncomfortable or threatened Teach children not to download programmes, music, or files without permission – copyright laws Talk to teenagers about online adult content and pornography, risks involved and potential law breaking if downloading or sharing images Photographs – think about what the image is of and why you are posting it on line – once posted you loose control of that image Responsible behaviour online – not to spread gossip, bully or threaten Check before making financial transactions online – include ordering buying or selling – free Apps Online gambling
